Paragraph 1
When a class from Lakeside School visited the town museum, the students were invited to examine photographs of pottery fragments. The fragments had been found at different times during earlier research projects, and most of them were kept in separate boxes. The museum educator explained that the class would not handle the original objects. Instead, the students would use photographs, measurements, and written notes prepared for an educational activity. Their task was to ask whether two pieces could have come from the same pot. The first piece, labeled A, was a curved section of brown pottery with a small pattern of lines. The second piece, B, had a similar color and pattern, but nobody had yet tested whether its edge fitted A. One student was ready to say that the two pieces belonged together, but the educator asked the group to explain which facts actually supported that conclusion.

Paragraph 2
The students compared the measurements in the museum’s records. Piece A was seven centimeters across, while B was five centimeters across. Both were recorded as approximately six millimeters thick, although the notes warned that the thickness varied slightly along the edges. The students drew the curved lines on tracing paper to see whether the shapes seemed compatible. One group said that the curves looked similar, while another pointed out that pottery made in the same style might show similar curves even if the pieces came from different objects. The educator praised the second group for identifying an alternative explanation. She reminded the class that a measurement was a fact about an object, while a claim about the object’s history was an interpretation. The students wrote the measurements in one column and their possible interpretations in another.

Paragraph 3
A third piece, C, was introduced later in the lesson. It had been photographed beside A during an earlier exhibition, and an old label said that the two pieces were probably related. However, the educator showed the students a correction note added by the museum after that exhibition. The label had been written before staff members checked the original discovery records. Those records suggested that C had been found in a different area from A. The correction note did not declare that the pieces were definitely unrelated, but it warned readers that the earlier label had gone beyond the evidence available at the time. The students learned that a later correction could change how an old label should be understood. A label was not automatically correct merely because it had been displayed in a museum.

Paragraph 4
During the final activity, the class prepared short exhibition captions for visitors. One caption said, ‘These three fragments certainly came from one pot.’ Another said, ‘The fragments share some visual features, but the available records do not establish that they came from one pot.’ The students compared the two sentences and chose the second because it separated a visible similarity from an unconfirmed conclusion. They also considered what further information might help: more detailed photographs of the edges, measurements made with consistent methods, and notes about where each fragment had been discovered. The educator explained that researchers sometimes revise their views as new information appears. Changing a conclusion was not necessarily evidence that the earlier researchers had been careless; it could also be a responsible response to better evidence.

Paragraph 5
When the students returned to school, they discussed how the activity related to English reading. A statement containing must have, may have, or might have could express different levels of confidence about an earlier event. A passive sentence could focus on an object that had been discovered or recorded without naming the person responsible. A relative clause could add information about where an item had been found. These grammar patterns helped the students describe the museum’s records accurately. In their final English report, they wrote that the fragments might belong to related objects, but the evidence was incomplete. They included the measured widths and the correction note, then explained what still needed to be checked. The teacher said that good reading and good research shared an important habit: do not confuse an interesting possibility with a verified fact.

Paragraph 1
Paragraph 2
Paragraph 3
Paragraph 4
Paragraph 5
must have、may have、might haveは過去の出来事について確信の程度を変え、受動態は発見者などを明示せず発見・記録された物を中心に表せる。
