Paragraph 1
At Blue Shore School, the environmental club planned to count visible litter on a public beach. The teacher selected two marked sections, A and B, each fifty meters long. The students would look at the ground for thirty minutes and record items without touching sharp or unknown materials. For this classroom project, they used only two categories: visible plastic items and visible paper items. The teacher emphasized that the categories did not include everything that might be found on a real beach. Before the activity, the students drew a map showing the exact boundaries of A and B. A number from one section would describe a small part of the coast at a particular time, not automatically the condition of the entire shore. They also agreed to use the same counting rules so that a large object and a small fragment would each count as one item.

Paragraph 2
On the first observation day, section A contained forty-two plastic items and eighteen paper items. Its total was sixty. Section B had twenty-eight plastic items and twelve paper items, for a total of forty. The class calculated that plastic represented seventy percent of the counted items in both sections. Forty-two divided by sixty and twenty-eight divided by forty both gave zero point seven. Ken argued that section A must therefore have seventy percent of its surface covered by plastic. The teacher corrected him. Seventy percent described the proportion of counted items, not the area of ground they covered. The students had not measured the size or mass of each item. A large piece and a tiny fragment counted equally in this method, so the results were useful only when the unit of measurement was stated clearly.

Paragraph 3
Three days later, the students returned to section A after a storm. They counted fifty-five visible items in the same marked area. The first total had been sixty, so the new count was five lower. A volunteer suggested that the storm had washed five objects away. Another student pointed out that visitors might have collected some litter, while other objects could have arrived during the same period. The club had not watched the beach continuously between the two visits. It therefore could not establish why the count had changed. The teacher asked the group to write, ‘The recorded count in A fell from sixty to fifty-five between our two observations.’ This sentence described the measurement without inventing a cause. Section B was not surveyed again, so the class could not say whether its count had risen or fallen.

Paragraph 4
For the next study, the class decided to keep the marked boundaries and to observe the beach at similar times of day. It also considered recording the approximate size of each item instead of assuming that all pieces represented the same amount of material. One student proposed using photographs to check the counts later. The teacher said that photographs could help, but objects hidden under sand might be missed. Another student suggested that everyone should collect every object they found. The teacher disagreed because students were not trained to handle sharp or unfamiliar materials. They should follow the local authority’s safety instructions and ask adults about dangerous items. The aim of the class activity was observation under supervision, not an unsupervised cleanup operation. Students could learn from the data without handling anything unsafe.

Paragraph 5
At the school exhibition, the club placed the first counts from A and B beside the later count from A. The students labeled each number with its date, section, item category, and observation period. They could state that A had more counted items than B during the first survey. They could also explain that seventy percent of the counted items in each section had been classified as plastic. The later count in A was five lower, but the reason remained unknown. The final poster did not claim that the entire beach was becoming cleaner or more polluted. The class had sampled only two short sections, and only one of them had been checked again. The teacher praised the report because its conclusions remained within the evidence collected and its measurements were defined precisely enough for readers to understand.

Paragraph 1
Paragraph 2
Paragraph 3
Paragraph 4
Paragraph 5
