Reading

原因からの行動For this reason / Therefore課題に対応する行動は何か
As a result / In conclusionどんな変化や総括があるか

In some rural communities, regular bus routes are difficult to maintain because few people use them at certain hours. One town began testing a smaller bus that residents could reserve by telephone or online. The service was intended to make it easier for people to reach a hospital and local shops without driving. (1) ______, residents living far from existing bus stops could request a ride from places closer to home. However, the project created a new problem: requests often arrived at the same time in the morning, while vehicles remained unused later in the day. Officials therefore began adjusting the timetable using reservation records. (2) ______, they kept telephone bookings available for residents who were unfamiliar with online systems. The town planned to study the service further before deciding whether to expand it.

A As a result / B Nevertheless / C For instance / D In contrast
A On the contrary / B In addition / C Otherwise / D Instead of

Digital archives allow museums to share historical documents with people who cannot visit in person. The files also reduce the need for researchers to handle fragile originals repeatedly. However, creating digital copies is only part of the work. Some photographs have unclear dates, and written descriptions may contain errors. Museum employees must check sources before publishing information. (1) ______, several institutions have begun asking local historians to review uncertain details and adding explanations that show where each claim came from. The process takes time and money, but it can help users interpret records more carefully. Museums still encourage physical visits when possible because digital images cannot fully represent an object’s size or texture. (2) ______, online access and careful preservation should be regarded as complementary methods rather than competing goals.

A For this reason / B On the other hand / C Nevertheless / D Similarly

Students conducted an experiment to see whether different levels of light affected plant growth. The first group placed pots near a sunny window, while the second group kept pots in a darker corner. After two weeks, the plants near the window appeared taller. Some students immediately concluded that light had caused the difference. Their teacher, (1) ______, pointed out that the groups had not measured how much water each plant received. The result was interesting, but it did not demonstrate a single cause. The class repeated the experiment using identical amounts of water and recorded measurements over a longer period. (2) ______, they learned that reliable conclusions depend on careful comparisons and the control of relevant conditions, not only on an attractive initial result.

A therefore / B however / C similarly / D for example
A In contrast / B As a result / C Otherwise / D Nevertheless

A town introduced reusable cups at several outdoor festivals to reduce the number of disposable containers. Visitors paid a small deposit when receiving a cup and got the money back after returning it. This encouraged many people to bring cups to a collection point rather than throw them away. The program, (1) ______, required organizers to wash and transport the cups safely. During a busy festival, some collection points became crowded, and staff struggled to process returns quickly. The organizers then added more return locations and clearly marked separate lines for collecting and returning cups. They also asked volunteers to explain the system to visitors. (2) ______, the town was able to reduce delays at return points, although it still needed to measure the overall environmental impact.

A for example / B however / C therefore / D likewise

A group of students used translation applications when communicating with visitors from another country. The tools helped them understand basic instructions and unfamiliar words quickly. Some students therefore felt more confident about starting conversations. However, the apps sometimes produced unnatural expressions when the speakers used jokes or local sayings. Students also became less willing to check whether the translations were accurate. To address this problem, their teacher suggested using the tools only as a starting point and checking important messages with other sources. (1) ______, the students practiced asking simple questions in English when a translation seemed unclear. The aim was not to ban technology, but to develop communication skills alongside careful tool use. (2) ______, students learned that successful exchanges require both useful technology and active human judgment.

A In addition / B Otherwise / C On the contrary / D In spite of
A Nevertheless / B As a result / C For instance / D However

Volunteers began observing birds and insects along a river to understand how the local environment was changing. They used a simple application to record the time, location, and type of each observation. The records helped organizers identify places that deserved closer attention. (1) ______, a sudden increase in reported insects did not necessarily mean that the insect population had grown. More volunteers might simply have visited the area than in previous months. Organizers therefore asked participants to record how long they observed each location and how many people were present. These details could help researchers compare reports fairly. (2) ______, the group avoided making broad statements about environmental improvement until additional observations were available.

A Similarly / B However / C As a result / D In addition
A For this reason / B In contrast / C For example / D Nevertheless
