Several communities are considering extending the opening hours of libraries and community centers during unusually hot summer days. The idea is to offer places where residents can rest indoors without having to make a purchase. However, keeping buildings open longer requires more staff and electricity, and not every location is easy to reach by public transportation. A town planning a small trial therefore decided to choose two buildings close to bus routes rather than extending hours at every facility immediately. The organizers also plan to record visitor numbers at different times and ask residents about access difficulties. Such information may help them decide whether additional sites are needed. They caution that offering public indoor space cannot replace other support, such as clear weather information and assistance for people who have difficulty traveling. The town has not yet measured whether the proposed arrangement improves residents’ health; the initial goal is to learn which facilities people could actually use.

1:Why did the town select only two facilities? A. Because every facility had already been closed permanently. / B. To stop residents from using public transportation. / C. Because the town had already proved a health benefit. / D. To test accessible locations while limiting operating demands.
2:What information does the town hope to collect? A. The amount of money visitors spend at nearby shops. / B. The annual income of all local residents. / C. Visitor patterns and difficulties reaching the facilities. / D. The exact number of heat-related illnesses prevented.

A small regional archive has begun creating digital copies of historical photographs and handwritten letters. Supporters say that online access can help distant schools use these materials without repeatedly handling fragile originals. Yet the project has revealed a less obvious difficulty: many documents have incomplete dates or unclear descriptions. When an old photograph is labeled with the wrong year, students may draw inaccurate conclusions about the history it illustrates. To reduce this risk, the archive asks local historians to review descriptions and marks uncertain information clearly. The team also records where each item came from and distinguishes the original source from interpretations added later. Producing these explanations takes longer than simply scanning pages, so the archive is publishing only selected collections at first. The organizers believe that making documents available is useful, but they do not claim that digital images can fully replace visiting the original objects or studying their physical characteristics.

7:What problem did the archive discover? A. The scanning equipment could not capture any images. / B. Some digital records lacked reliable dates or descriptions. / C. The original documents were all identical. / D. Schools had no interest in historical material.
8:Why is the archive releasing only selected collections initially? A. Reviewing sources and explanations requires extra time. / B. The archive plans to destroy the remaining originals. / C. The project has permanently abandoned online access. / D. Digital records can never contain handwriting.

Volunteer bird surveys can help people notice wildlife in parks and along rivers. Participants often record the species, locations, and times of their sightings in mobile applications. However, a higher number of reports does not always show that more birds are living in the area. It could mean that more people joined the survey, that they observed for longer, or that the weather made birds easier to see. One community group has therefore asked volunteers to include the length of each visit and the number of observers in their reports. It has also introduced short identification lessons to reduce mistakes between similar species. Researchers may then compare data collected under more consistent conditions. Even with these improvements, a small sample cannot establish the population of every species. Organizers describe the program as a way to gather useful preliminary information and encourage learning, not as proof of a national trend.

13:Why might the number of recorded sightings rise? A. Every species must have doubled its population. / B. The application prevents people from making observations. / C. All volunteers record exactly the same amount of time. / D. Observation effort or visibility may have changed.
14:How does the group try to improve the reports? A. By ignoring the number of people present. / B. By publishing population claims before examining data. / C. By recording observation effort and offering identification lessons. / D. By accepting only reports of rare birds.

Some online retailers are testing reusable shipping boxes that customers return after receiving their orders. In theory, using the same container many times may reduce the number of disposable packages. Still, a reusable system has costs that ordinary packaging does not. Empty boxes must be collected, inspected, and cleaned before being sent out again. If return vehicles travel long distances or too few customers return their boxes, some expected benefits may disappear. One retailer has decided to count not just how many reusable containers it distributes but how many times each container actually completes a delivery. It will also compare the energy used for cleaning and return transport with the amount of disposable material avoided. The staff have not yet concluded that the program is better overall. They argue that environmental claims should reflect the complete process rather than an attractive photograph of a reusable box.

19:Why is the retailer tracking the number of completed deliveries per box? A. To prove that return transportation uses no energy. / B. To measure actual reuse rather than boxes distributed. / C. To show that every box is returned after its first use. / D. To eliminate all inspection and cleaning.
20:What could reduce the program’s expected benefit? A. Low return rates and demanding return transportation. / B. Customers receiving their products in any container. / C. Some products being ordered online. / D. Retaining records of box usage.

In areas with many roads and buildings, heavy rainfall can flow quickly over paved surfaces and place pressure on drainage systems. Some planners have begun experimenting with rain gardens, planted areas designed to absorb part of the water that would otherwise run across the ground. These spaces may also provide habitats for insects and make streets more pleasant to walk through. However, their performance depends on soil conditions, maintenance, and the intensity of rainfall. In one proposed neighborhood trial, workers will measure how much water flows into selected drains before and after installing the gardens. They will also record maintenance needs and check whether the plants survive dry periods. The planners stress that rain gardens are not a complete replacement for underground drainage infrastructure. They hope the measurements will reveal where small planted areas can provide useful support, rather than assuming every site will produce the same results.

25:What is one intended function of rain gardens? A. To prevent all forms of flooding in any weather. / B. To replace every underground drainage system. / C. To stop the growth of plants in city streets. / D. To absorb some rainwater that would otherwise run over paved ground.
26:Why will the planners collect measurements before and after installation? A. To avoid maintaining the planted areas. / B. To determine the age of nearby buildings. / C. To evaluate the gardens’ effects under local conditions. / D. To guarantee identical results in every neighborhood.

Improving insulation in older public buildings can reduce unwanted heat transfer through walls and windows. Supporters argue that this may make classrooms and meeting rooms more comfortable and reduce the energy required for heating or cooling. Yet the costs of renovating a building vary considerably, and some older structures have design features that make standard changes difficult. Instead of renovating an entire group of buildings immediately, one school district is considering a pilot project in a single building. Staff will compare energy use during similar weather conditions and ask users whether rooms feel more comfortable. They also intend to monitor ventilation because reducing air movement without a proper plan could create other problems. The district says the pilot will help identify sensible improvements, but it cannot promise that every building will achieve the same savings or that the renovation will pay for itself within a fixed number of years.

31:Why is the district proposing a single-building trial? A. To avoid checking ventilation after improvements. / B. To assess costs, comfort, and energy results before expanding. / C. Because insulation always performs identically. / D. Because old buildings cannot be heated.
32:What additional issue does the passage say should be monitored? A. Ventilation after renovation. / B. The number of unrelated school clubs. / C. The color of the new classroom furniture. / D. The dates on historical photographs.
