Some students…からAll students…

I read a story about … What happened?、Why?、What did the characters learn?

Yui wanted to read more English books, but she often stopped because she tried to understand every unfamiliar word. A teacher suggested that she choose a shorter book about a subject she liked. Yui selected a story about animals. She understood the main events even though a few words were new. After finishing, she explained the story to a friend in three sentences. She realized that choosing a suitable level did not mean choosing the easiest possible book. It meant choosing a book that she could follow while still learning something new. The following week, she tried a slightly longer story and checked whether she could explain the ending without looking at a translation.

  1. 問1:Why did Yui stop reading often?
  2. 問2:What type of book did the teacher recommend?
  3. 問3:What was the subject of Yui’s next book?
  4. 問4:Did Yui understand every single word?
  5. 問5:How many sentences did Yui use to explain it?
  6. 問6:Does ‘suitable level’ mean only the easiest books?
  7. 問7:What did she try the following week?
  8. 問8:What did she check without a translation?

Two students created an English guide for visitors to a small school exhibition. The first version had long sentences and several difficult expressions. Three younger students tried to use the guide. Two found the history display, but one could not find the science corner. The students asked which part was unclear, and the reader pointed to a sentence near the map. They shortened that sentence and added an arrow showing the route. In the second test, all three readers found the science corner. The students learned that more information was not always better information. A useful guide should provide enough detail without confusing the person who reads it.

  1. 問11:What did the two students create?
  2. 問12:Who used the first version?
  3. 問13:How many found the history display?
  4. 問14:What could one reader not find?
  5. 問15:What part was confusing?
  6. 問16:What two changes were made?
  7. 問17:What was the result of the second test?
  8. 問18:Does the text claim more details are always better?

A student group visited the same small park on two different days. On Tuesday, they saw twelve birds near a pond, but on Friday they saw only seven. Mika suggested that the weather might explain the difference. However, the group had not recorded the temperature or wind. The teacher asked them whether they had visited at the same time of day. They had not. Rather than claiming that the weather caused the difference, the students decided to collect more information. They planned to return at the same time on several days and record the temperature, wind, and number of birds. They also wrote down that their first explanation was only a hypothesis, not a proven conclusion.

  1. 問21:How many birds were seen on Tuesday?
  2. 問22:How many were seen on Friday?
  3. 問23:What was Mika’s first possible explanation?
  4. 問24:Which two weather factors were not recorded?
  5. 問25:Had the visits happened at the same time of day?
  6. 問26:Did the group prove the cause was weather?
  7. 問27:What will the group record on later visits?
  9. 問29:Why is a conclusion about weather premature?

Ken read an English story about two friends preparing a community garden. At first, one character wanted to buy expensive tools, while the other wanted to borrow simple tools from neighbors. Ken thought the second idea was better because it could reduce costs. When his teacher asked for evidence, he pointed to the part of the story where the friends compared prices. His partner had a different opinion and said that borrowed tools might not always be available. Ken listened and changed his summary to include both advantages and possible problems. After the discussion, he wrote a short paragraph about the story. He learned that explaining a book means more than naming the characters or remembering the ending.

  1. 問31:What were the two friends preparing?
  2. 問32:What did the first character want?
  3. 問33:What did the second character suggest?
  4. 問34:Why did Ken prefer the second idea?
  5. 問35:What evidence did Ken show?
  6. 問36:What concern did Ken’s partner raise?
  7. 問37:How did Ken change his summary?
  8. 問38:What did he write after the discussion?
