At first, I thought …
After listening to …
I changed my opinion because …
We do not yet know whether …

At first, Sara thought students should be allowed to talk freely in the reading room. She believed conversation helped friends learn together. Her group interviewed twelve students. Five wanted a quiet room, four wanted a discussion area, and three wanted both options. Sara also spoke with a student who needed a quiet place to concentrate. She realized that her first plan did not meet everyone’s needs. She changed her opinion: the school should keep one quiet area and use a separate room for group discussions. She explained that her new idea came from listening to people with different needs, not simply following the most popular answer.

  1. What did Sara believe at first?
  2. How many students were interviewed?
  3. How many wanted a quiet room?
  4. How many wanted a discussion area?
  5. How many wanted both?
  6. What problem did Sara notice?
  7. What was her revised proposal?
  8. Why did her opinion change?

A group discussed whether homework notices should be posted only online. Ken supported online notices because they were easy to update. Yuna disagreed because some families might not see a message in time. The group talked with teachers and students about the problem. A teacher suggested sending notices online but also giving a paper reminder when information was important. Ken agreed that this would reduce the risk of missed messages. The group proposed trying the mixed method for one month. It would count how many paper notices were used and ask families whether they received important information. The students did not yet know whether the method would be successful.

  1. What did Ken prefer originally?
  2. Why did Ken prefer them?
  3. What was Yuna’s concern?
  4. Who suggested a mixed method?
  5. When would paper still be used?
  6. How long was the trial?
  7. What would the group count?
  8. Was the trial already proven successful?

Mika asked twenty classmates what kind of English activity they preferred. Eleven chose reading short stories, six chose speaking games, and three chose writing. She first concluded that reading must be the most effective way to improve English. Her teacher asked whether the survey measured learning results. It did not. It only measured preferences. Mika revised her statement: ‘In this group, reading was the most popular activity, but we do not yet know which method helps students improve most.’ She planned to compare changes in students’ work after trying different activities. Her classmates appreciated that she had corrected a claim that was stronger than the evidence.

  1. How many students answered?
  2. How many preferred reading?
  3. How many preferred speaking?
  4. How many preferred writing?
  5. What did Mika originally claim?
  6. What had the survey actually measured?
  7. How did she revise the claim?
  8. What further evidence did she plan to collect?

Naoki wanted to improve his ability to explain opinions in English. On Monday, he wrote a simple goal: give one reason after each opinion. On Tuesday, he discussed a topic with two classmates and noticed that he repeated the word ‘good’ without explaining why. On Wednesday, he wrote three short examples using ‘because’. On Thursday, he asked a classmate to disagree with one of his ideas, so that he could practice responding politely. On Friday, he recorded a short reflection. He could now state reasons more clearly, but he still found it difficult to answer unexpected questions. He decided that next week’s goal would be to ask and answer two follow-up questions during each discussion.

  2. How many classmates joined Tuesday’s discussion?
  3. What word did he repeat too often?
  4. How many example sentences did he write on Wednesday?
