独自初見長文5問と全文和訳
Original Reading: A high school student council compared two surveys about extending library opening hours. Last year, forty volunteers answered the question, ‘Would you support keeping the library open later if there were no additional costs?’ Thirty said yes, giving a support rate of seventy-five percent. This year, fifty volunteers answered a different question: ‘Would you support keeping the library open later if the school had to reduce its budget for other activities?’ Twenty-five said yes, giving a support rate of fifty percent. A student journalist wrote that support for longer opening hours had fallen by twenty-five percentage points. The mathematics was correct, but the editor asked whether the surveys measured exactly the same opinion. The second question included a budget trade-off that the first had not mentioned. In addition, the volunteers were not necessarily the same students. The editor therefore said that the difference in reported percentages could reflect changes in question wording, participants, or actual views. The club revised the article to show both questions in full rather than displaying only the rates. It proposed using consistent wording in future surveys and recording how participants were selected. The final report did not claim the school should open later; it explained what the available evidence did and did not establish.
全文和訳
高校の生徒会は図書館の開館時間延長について二つの調査を比較した。前年、志願者40人に『追加費用がなければ延長を支持するか』と尋ね、30人が賛成したので支持率は75％だった。今年は別の志願者50人に『ほかの活動予算を削減する必要がある場合でも延長を支持するか』と尋ね、25人が賛成して50％となった。生徒記者は支持率が25パーセントポイント下がったと書いた。計算は正しかったが、編集長は二つの調査が全く同じ意見を測ったか疑問を示した。今年の質問には前年になかった予算の代償が含まれていた。回答した志願者も同じ生徒とは限らなかった。したがって率の差は質問文・参加者・実際の意見の違いによる可能性がある。部は率だけではなく両方の質問全文を示すよう修正した。今後は同じ文言を使い、回答者の選び方も記録すると提案した。最終記事は夜間開放の是非を断定せず、利用できる証拠の範囲を説明した。
