- 5. Conclusionでは筆者の断定度に合わせてmay・might・suggest・did not establishなどを適切に読む
Background:A fictional school ecology club wanted to know whether partial shade might affect the early growth of tomato seedlings. The students did not assume that taller plants were necessarily healthier.
Methods:Forty-eight seedlings of similar initial size were randomly divided into two groups of twenty-four. Both groups received the same amount of water for twenty-one days. The first group was placed under shade cloth during the brightest hours; the second grew in an uncovered area. Students measured height at the beginning and end of the trial.
Results:The mean height increase was ten centimetres in the shaded group and eight centimetres in the uncovered group. Two seedlings in the uncovered group developed yellow leaves, but the club had not tested why the colour changed.
Limitations and conclusion:The club measured height and visible appearance, not fruit production or long-term survival. The trial was short, involved one location, and had not been replicated. The students reported an observed two-centimetre difference in mean height increase; they did not conclude that shade would improve every crop in every climate.
Background:A fictional sixth-form English class investigated how learners used vocabulary support while reading unfamiliar short articles. The research question concerned study behaviour, not the effectiveness of a particular commercial product.
Methods:Sixty-four volunteers chose one of two optional support formats. Thirty-six used example sentences showing words in context; twenty-eight used a simple word list. After a week, all participants answered ten questions about a new passage. Students chose their format, and the school had not collected a comparable reading score before the trial.
Results:The example-sentence group answered an average of eight questions correctly, while the word-list group answered an average of seven. Some volunteers changed how often they studied during the week, but their study time was not recorded consistently.
Limitations and conclusion:Because participation and format choice were voluntary, initial motivation and ability could differ between the groups. The one-question difference in averages was an observation, not a proven causal effect of example sentences. Teachers recommended measuring starting ability and study time before conducting a more controlled comparison.
Background:A fictional community centre wanted to make its emergency-preparedness leaflet easier for visitors to read. Staff created a version with larger letters and fewer words, but they did not remove the instructions about where to seek help.
Methods:The centre invited seventy visitors to compare the original leaflet with the revised version. Fifty returned questionnaires. The form asked which layout the visitors preferred, not whether they could recall the instructions correctly. The participants were people who had already visited the centre; residents who never used the centre were not surveyed.
Results:Thirty-five of the fifty respondents preferred the revised leaflet, ten preferred the original, and five were unsure. The response rate among invited visitors was fifty out of seventy, or about seventy-one percent.
Limitations and conclusion:A preference for larger letters did not establish improved comprehension or preparedness during an emergency. Nonrespondents and people outside the centre might have different views. Staff planned an independent comprehension test and further feedback before replacing all leaflets.
Background:A fictional municipal archive began digitising letters about old markets. Researchers wanted to make the documents easier to search while preserving uncertainty about when particular events had taken place.
Methods:Volunteers scanned two hundred and forty letters. One hundred and eighty letters had a date written on them, and sixty were undated. Staff compared the dates on the dated letters with entries in an existing archive index. They checked whether the two records agreed but did not assume that either record was always correct.
Results:Twenty of the one hundred and eighty dated letters showed a discrepancy between the letter and the index. Some differences appeared to involve transcription mistakes, while others required more investigation. The team did not alter the original image files.
Limitations and conclusion:The study identified inconsistencies in records, not the exact dates of every historical event. The sixty undated letters still required independent evidence. The archive planned to keep both the original dates and any corrected index entries visible, with notes explaining unresolved cases.
48 randomly divided into two groups of 24。
根拠:same amount of water / shade cloth vs uncovered。
根拠:for twenty-one days。
根拠:had not tested why。
根拠:not fruit production or long-term survival。
問9:Students randomly assigned forty-eight seedlings to two groups and compared their height changes over twenty-one days with the same watering.
10:The shaded seedlings had a mean height increase of ten centimetres, compared with eight centimetres for the uncovered group. However, this short single-site trial did not measure fruit production or demonstrate benefits in other climates.
Limitations and conclusion
根拠:volunteers chose their format。
根拠:ten questions about a new passage。
根拠:voluntary choice / no comparable baseline。
根拠:had not collected comparable reading score before trial。
根拠:not recorded consistently。
問19:Sixty-four volunteers chose between contextual examples and word lists before answering ten reading questions after one week.
20:The contextual-example group averaged eight correct answers, compared with seven in the word-list group. Because students chose their own support and starting ability was not measured, the difference did not prove a causal benefit.
Limitations and conclusion
根拠:larger letters and fewer words / did not remove instructions。
根拠:not whether they could recall instructions。
問29:The survey measured layout preferences but did not test comprehension or include residents who never visited the centre.
30:Thirty-five of fifty respondents preferred the revised leaflet, but this did not demonstrate better comprehension. The centre planned a separate comprehension test and broader feedback before replacing all materials.
Limitations and conclusion
Methods: two hundred and forty letters。
根拠:did not assume either was always correct。
根拠:did not alter the original image files。
問39:The project found inconsistencies between records but could not establish the exact dates of every event, especially for undated letters.
40:The archive found date discrepancies in twenty of one hundred and eighty dated letters and retained the original images. It planned to keep corrected entries and unresolved notes visible while investigating undated documents separately.
