NEW TREASURE Stage5 Lesson9

A fictional student, Sora, kept a seven-day study diary before a school presentation. From Monday to Thursday, Sora recorded six, seven, six and eight hours of sleep. The corresponding self-reported concentration scores were two, three, two and four on a five-point scale. On Friday, Sora slept seven hours but did not record concentration, and on Saturday and Sunday no entries were made. In the first version of a class chart, Friday’s missing score appeared as zero. Sora corrected it to “NA,” because no response had been collected. A classmate noticed that longer sleep and higher concentration scores often appeared together in the four complete entries. However, four records from one individual cannot establish that extra sleep caused a higher score. Other factors, including the task, daily schedule and expectations, had not been held constant. The teacher asked the students to distinguish a reported feeling from a measured performance result and to make no medical claims from this exercise.

Forty fictional students prepared a short English presentation. They were invited to rate how nervous they felt before and after a practice session. Thirty-two returned both forms. Of these, twenty said their nervousness felt lower afterward, eight said it felt unchanged and four said it felt higher. Another eight students did not return both forms, so the teacher did not classify their changes. The class newspaper initially described the result as “Most students became calmer.” The teacher suggested a more precise statement: “Twenty of the thirty-two students with paired responses reported feeling less nervous.” Students had chosen how much they practised, and the exercise did not measure speaking quality before and after practice using a common rubric. Some students also said that feeling more nervous did not necessarily mean they had performed worse. The teacher invited the group to improve the design of any future survey and to respect those who did not wish to share personal feelings.

A fictional high school planned two English writing tasks. Task A was due at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, and Task B was due at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. A notice issued on Monday changed only Task B’s deadline to Friday at noon because the class portal would undergo maintenance on Thursday evening. Task A remained due on Tuesday. Students could submit both files before their deadlines, but an upload progress bar did not prove successful receipt. The portal displayed a confirmation number after a complete submission. By Tuesday at 5:00 p.m., twenty-six of thirty students had submitted Task A successfully. By Friday at noon, twenty-eight students had valid confirmations for Task B. The two groups of successful submitters were not necessarily identical. A class representative suggested that extending the deadline had caused more students to submit Task B. The teacher explained that the tasks were different and no controlled comparison had been conducted. The notices recorded deadlines and counts, not the reason each student submitted.

A fictional school learning center asked fifty students which type of support they would prefer during a busy term. Forty students answered. Eighteen selected a quieter study room, twelve selected shorter homework instructions and ten selected a weekly review meeting. The questionnaire allowed each respondent to choose only one option. The center director emphasized that the results described preferences among respondents, not proven effects on test performance. Some students had reasons for preferring two options but were unable to record both. The center could afford to test only one change immediately. Instead of treating the most common response as an automatic decision, staff checked whether the quiet room would be accessible, whether teachers could prepare clearer instructions and whether a review meeting would conflict with club activities. The director approved a two-week trial of the quieter room, not a permanent school-wide rule. The center would record visits and ask for feedback; it had not yet measured changes in grades or well-being.

解答1: Monday through Thursday.
解答3: Four out of five.
解答5: 2.75 out of five.
解答6: No, it was missing.
10: The entries suggest an association, but they do not establish causation.
解答12: Thirty-two.
20: Twenty of the thirty-two students with paired responses reported feeling less nervous.
解答21: Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.
解答22: Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
解答23: Friday at noon.

解答29: Two.
39: A two-week trial of the quieter study room.

Critical Writing
A short diary can help a learner reflect on a routine, but it is not proof that one habit caused a result. Sora’s four complete entries show different sleep hours and reported concentration scores. Yet the task and daily conditions were not controlled, and Friday’s concentration score is missing. A useful summary should state what was recorded and avoid claiming a universal rule.
The practice survey offers useful information about feelings, not measured presentation quality. Among thirty-two students with both responses, twenty reported less nervousness, eight reported no change and four reported more. Since eight students lacked paired responses and practice amounts varied, the result should not be presented as proof that the session improved every student’s speaking.
A changed deadline is not the same as evidence of its effect. In this fictional class, Task B’s deadline was extended to Friday at noon, while Task A remained due on Tuesday. Twenty-eight valid confirmations were recorded for B and twenty-six for A. The assignments differed, so the two totals cannot prove that the extension caused the difference.
Survey results should guide questions rather than decide policy automatically. Eighteen of forty respondents preferred a quieter study room, but that is not a majority of respondents and does not prove any effect on grades. A two-week trial may help staff learn how the space is used, provided that accessibility and other practical needs are checked.
