The Last Sentence
Original Reading: On Friday afternoon, I entered the school’s radio room to prepare an announcement for the science festival. A younger student named Yui was waiting by the microphone with the latest schedule. Beside her lay an old notebook with a blue cover. I recognized it immediately. It was the notebook I had carried when I made my worst mistake as a member of the broadcasting club.
Two years earlier, during my first spring in the club, I had been asked to announce a change to the entrance used by visitors. The draft said that the west entrance would close at four, and the east entrance would remain open. I practiced the first sentence repeatedly because I was afraid of speaking too slowly. When the microphone light came on, I read the first part clearly. Then I stopped. I had forgotten the last sentence about the east entrance. Some visitors walked toward the west gate and found it closed. A teacher helped them reach the correct entrance, and no one was injured, but the confusion delayed the event. I felt terrible.
After the event, the teacher showed me the written draft. She did not suggest I had omitted the sentence on purpose. Instead, she asked how the club could prevent a similar mistake. We developed a two-person checklist: one student would read the announcement while another followed the text and confirmed that the final sentence had been spoken. We also agreed to mark directions and opening times in a different color. For the next two years, the club used that procedure for important announcements. I kept the old notebook because it reminded me why the last sentence mattered.
‘Are you ready?’ Yui asked, bringing me back to the radio room on Friday. She had already compared the new festival schedule with the official notice. I read the announcement aloud, and she checked each line. This time, the final sentence explained that visitors should use the east entrance after five. I paused briefly, then finished it. Yui nodded and switched off the microphone. For the first time, the old memory no longer felt like proof that I was a poor speaker. It had become a reminder that careful preparation was something we could share.
