The Empty Auditorium

Original Reading|Paragraph 1

At eight on Friday morning, the school librarian received a message that the auditorium heater had stopped working. The reading event was not canceled. Instead, the organizing teacher moved it to the library on the second floor. She posted the revised notice on the main entrance board and updated the school’s online schedule. By nine, volunteers were arranging chairs in the library. The reader knows about the change before Hana, the student who was scheduled to give the opening reading, does.

Original Reading|Paragraph 2

Hana had printed the program on Thursday evening. On Friday’s train, her phone battery ran out. She could not check the online schedule and, because she entered through a side door, she did not see the new notice at the main entrance. At half past nine, she reached the auditorium and found the doors closed. No one was waiting outside. She felt a sudden heaviness in her stomach. ‘They must have canceled the event,’ she thought. She had practiced her reading for two weeks and was afraid that the work had been wasted. The reader, however, already knows that the others are preparing in the library.

Original Reading|Paragraph 3

Hana sat near the old entrance and began writing an apology message to the club, though she had done nothing wrong. At quarter to ten, Yui, another volunteer, found her. ‘We’ve been looking for you! The reading is upstairs in the library,’ Yui said. Hana showed her the old program. Yui explained the heater problem and the updated notice. They went upstairs together and arrived five minutes before ten. The chairs were full, and the teacher was ready to introduce the speakers. At ten, Hana stepped forward and gave her reading as planned.

Original Reading|Paragraph 4

Afterward, the teacher suggested that future venue changes should be announced at both entrances as well as online. Hana also decided to save the school’s contact number on paper. The empty auditorium had been real, but her belief that the event was canceled had not. What the reader knew from the opening scene made her worry understandable while also revealing the mistake in her conclusion.
