NEW TREASURE Stage4・5の英語メール・Project・Actionでは、同じ「お願い」でもWould you mind＋ing / Would you mind if I …? / I would appreciate it if … / I was wondering if …の役割が異なります。Would you mind checking the file? は「相手に確認してもらう依頼」、Would you mind if I checked the file? は「自分が確認してよいかという許可の確認」です。後者への No, not at all. は原則「気にしません＝構いません」という承諾です。慶英会独自40問・学校メール2題・全訳で、語順と会話の含意まで練習します。

Would you mindの返答はYes・Noが難しい
Would you mind if I opened the window? への No, not at all. は「気にしないので開けて構いません」。一方 Yes, I would. は「差し支えがあります」の方向です。短いYes／Noは現実の会話で誤解も生じるため、相手の応答を読み取りやすい Of course, go ahead. や I’d rather you didn’t. も確認しましょう。
I would appreciate it ifはitを省かない
I would appreciate it if you could send the document. がこの型です。学校英作文で I would appreciate if you … とする誤りが多いため、appreciate it if をまとまりとして覚えます。後続のcouldが丁寧な依頼を表し、すでに送信されたという確定した事実は述べません。
I was wondering ifは過去の思考だけを表すとは限らない
I was wondering if you could explain the second paragraph. は、相手に今から説明してもらえるかを控えめに尋ねています。過去進行形を使って現在の依頼を婉曲にする用法があり、過去の出来事だけを報告しているわけではありません。
丁寧さと正確さは別に検証する
メールにif possibleやI would be gratefulを入れても、返信期限・教室・資料の正式な情報が確定するわけではありません。お願いしたこと・相手が了承したこと・実際に送付されたことを区別するのが英語メールの読解では重要です。
