NEW TREASURE（ニュートレジャー）Stage4・5のRead・英文法では、whether / if / whether to / whether or not / whether A or Bの使い分けが重要です。I do not know whether to join. は自然ですが、if to joinとはしません。またabout whether、depend on whetherのように、前置詞の後の間接疑問ではwhetherを用います。この記事では選択が未決定なのか、実際に決定・実行されたのかまで区別します。

ifとwhetherの共通点・異なる点
- 間接疑問：ask if / whether the room is availableの両方が使える。
- whether to＋動詞原形：decide whether to attend。if toは不可。
- 前置詞の後：about whether、depend on whetherなどを用いる。
- whether or not：or notをwhetherの直後または節末に置ける。ifの直後にor notは置かない。
- whether A or B：選択肢が二つ以上ある場合も用いる。

目的を示すifと間接疑問のifを混同しない
If the hall is open, we can meet there. は条件ですが、We asked if the hall was open. は空いているかどうかを尋ねたという間接疑問です。The committee discussed whether to extend the opening hours. は延長を検討しただけで、延長が実際に行われたと述べていません。

Original Read｜Choosing Museum Guides
Paragraph 1 A fictional museum compared printed and recorded guides for its exhibition. It had not decided whether to keep paper copies or use audio only. Staff recorded forty-eight uses of printed guides and sixty-two uses of audio guides during a month. The figures did not represent distinct users, since one person could use a guide repeatedly.
Paragraph 2 Visitors asked questions about whether audio descriptions would be accessible to everyone. The staff wondered whether to prepare an additional transcript, and they discussed whether the two formats produced similar levels of understanding. No comprehension test had been conducted.
Paragraph 3 Whether or not the final decision favored audio guides, the curator promised to identify the source of each historical date. Staff planned to interview nonusers and test accessibility before deciding. Their plan was not evidence that the extra research had already been completed.
