need washingは受動的な意味、need to washは能動的な意味
The windows need washing.は「窓を洗う必要がある」で、窓が自ら洗うのではありません。We need to wash the windows.ならweが作業の主体です。主語が動作主なのか作業対象なのかを判断します。
needs checkedは標準的な学校英作文では避ける
一部の地域方言ではneeds checkedのような形が使われますが、標準的な学校英作文ではneeds checkingまたはneeds to be checkedを選びましょう。
「必要」と「作業完了」は別
Four posters need updating.から分かるのは更新作業が必要なことです。「すでに4枚を更新した」とは言えません。have been updatedなどの完了表現と区別して英問英答を作ります。

第4部｜The library noticeboard（問25〜30）
A fictional school library noticed that its information board contained several old announcements. The board itself needed cleaning, and four notices needed replacing because they showed the wrong dates. The librarian needed to check the opening hours before printing new notices. Two student volunteers offered to help with the cleaning, but only the librarian could approve the updated timetable. The board was still in use on Monday. No replacement notice had yet been posted. The school expected to finish the work by Thursday, provided the new dates were confirmed.

第5部｜Equipment in the science room（問31〜36）
A fictional science room had eight measuring devices. Five worked normally, while three needed repairing. The science teacher needed to contact a technician, and the technician was expected to inspect the faulty devices on Wednesday. None of the three had been repaired by Tuesday afternoon. The school planned to use the five working devices for a small experiment on Thursday. The teacher did not claim that the repair would definitely be finished by then. Students were reminded that a device needing repair was different from a device that had already been repaired.

第6部｜A school poster revision（問37〜42）
A fictional school prepared twelve posters for a cultural event. The design team checked all twelve and found four containing an incorrect start time. Those four posters needed updating, but the other eight could be used without changes. A teacher needed to verify the new start time before the team printed replacements. One student wrote that all twelve posters had been revised. The teacher corrected the sentence because none had yet been reprinted. The team planned to update only the four affected posters after receiving confirmation from the event office.

第7部｜An online survey form（問43〜48）
A fictional class collected thirty online survey responses. Six respondents said that the form was difficult to use on a phone. The class concluded that the form needed improving, particularly the size of its buttons. A student volunteer needed to test a revised design before recommending it to the teacher. The team did not know whether the six complaints represented everyone who had experienced difficulty, because not every respondent answered the optional feedback question. No new version had been released when the report was written. The teacher planned another test with the same questions after the redesign.

よくある質問
Q．needs washingは現在進行形ですか？
いいえ。need＋動名詞に受動的意味があり「洗う必要がある」という構文です。
Q．needs to repairは必ず間違いですか？
主語が人など修理を行う主体なら自然です。The car needs to repairでは車が修理するという意味になるため、通常はneeds repairingやneeds to be repairedとします。
Q．needs cleanedは英語として存在しませんか？
一部方言にはありますが、標準的な学校英作文の模範形にはしない方が適切です。
