if at all・if ever・if any・if anythingの違い

if at allは存在自体を留保する
The effect, if any, is likely to be small. も The tool helps only slightly, if at all. も、まず効果が存在するかどうかを留保しています。No effect at all なら効果なしと直接述べていますが、if at allはそれと同じ強さの断定ではありません。
rarely, if everは『一度もない』ではない
Cambridge Dictionaryでは rarely, if ever を、ほとんどない・おそらくないほどまれであるという意味で例示しています。会議が12回あり1回だけ中止した場合、主催者は「まれにしか中止しない」と言える一方、「これまでに一度も中止したことがない」は事実と矛盾します。
if anyは数・量の限定
Few, if any, problems were reported. は問題の数がゼロかごく少ないという限定であり、具体的な件数は示しません。fewは数えられる名詞、littleは数えられない名詞を基本にします。実測数が与えられていればその数を優先してください。
if everは疑いだけでなく強調にも使う
If ever there was a time to reconsider the plan, this is it. では「今こそ見直すべきときだ」と強調しています。rarely, if ever の意味をすべてのif everに機械的に当てはめないでください。前後にrarelyがあるか、独立した条件節かを判断します。
データがないのにif anyを『効果ゼロ』と誤訳しない
好みのアンケートしか実施していない場合、学力向上があったかどうかは分かりません。The effect on test scores, if any, remains unknown. は学力への効果があるかどうかを保留し、測定結果がないことを正直に示しています。

Fictional Learning Materials Survey. Forty students answered a question about their preferred study format. Twenty-four preferred printed materials, while sixteen preferred digital materials. The organiser said, “The difference in preference is recorded, but the effect on test scores, if any, remains unknown.” No scores had been collected during this survey. Another member claimed that printed materials had improved learning. The teacher explained that students’ preferences could not establish changes in academic performance. The committee planned a separate study but had not approved its design or schedule.

Fictional Club Meeting Schedule. A student reading club scheduled twelve meetings last term. Eleven went ahead as planned, while one was cancelled because the room was unavailable. The club leader said, “We rarely, if ever, cancel meetings.” The remark described an uncommon event, not a claim that no meeting had ever been cancelled. For the next term, the committee planned to keep the same schedule if at all possible. Final dates had not yet been confirmed. The report distinguished the observed record from the committee’s future intention.

英文Bの全文和訳
【架空のクラブ会議日程】生徒読書クラブは前学期に12回の会議を予定していた。11回は予定どおり実施され、1回は部屋が使えなかったため中止した。リーダーは「私たちは会議を中止することは、あるとしてもごくまれです」と述べた。これはまれな出来事を表すもので、一度も中止がなかったという主張ではない。次の学期、委員会は可能な限り同じ日程を維持する予定だったが、最終日程はまだ確定していなかった。報告書は確認済みの記録と今後の意向を区別していた。
