NEW TREASURE Stage4・5のRead・英作文でby means of／by way of／by no meansを同じ「手段」と訳してはいけません。by means of は「〜を手段として」、by way of は「〜として・例として」（文脈によっては経由して）、by no means は「決して〜ない」という強い否定です。特に文頭の By no means is this correct. では、否定語句による倒置に注意します。慶英会独自40問と初見英文2題、全訳・全解説を公開します。

by means ofは方法を説明する
The data were gathered by means of a questionnaire. は紙やデジタルなどの質問票を手段として回答を集めたという意味です。それで集めた情報が全員を代表していることまでは意味しません。サンプル数・回答率・資料の作成方法を別に確認してください。
by way ofは例や説明の形
She gave two examples by way of illustration. は例示のために2例を示したということです。また by way of apology は謝罪としての行為を表します。文脈によっては移動の経路も表しますが、方法を機械的にby means ofと交換しないでください。
by no meansは強い否定。文頭なら倒置
The result is by no means certain. は強い否定ですが普通の語順です。一方 By no means is the result certain. では否定の副詞句が文頭に来るため、be動詞が主語より前になります。一般動詞の過去なら By no means did they claim success. のようにdid＋原形を用います。
meansは単数でも語尾sが残る
a useful means of communication は「役に立つ一つの連絡手段」です。名詞meansは単数でもmeansという形です。by mean of とは書かず、by means ofをまとまりで覚えます。

The leader said, “By no means do these answers represent every student’s preference with certainty.” The records documented the twenty-four responses accurately, but the preferences of the sixteen non-respondents had not been collected. The club planned to make its next survey easier to complete, without claiming that the first survey had been worthless.

Fictional English Teaching Trial. A teacher presented two sample charts by way of illustration before explaining an experimental lesson. The trial took place on Thursday. The school confirmed the date and the number of submitted worksheets, but no test scores had been collected. One student claimed that the teaching method had been proved effective. Q. by means ofとby no meansは同じですか？
違います。前者は「〜という方法で」、後者は「決して〜ない」という強い否定です。
Q. by way ofは常に経由するという意味ですか？
いいえ。例示・説明・謝罪などの形式を表すことも多くあります。
Q. By no meansの後は必ず倒置しますか？
文頭に置いた否定語句として節を導く場合は通常倒置します。文の途中のis by no meansなどでは普通の語順です。
