Paragraph 1

The drama club at North Hill School was preparing a short play for the autumn festival. The play told the story of three students who wanted to reopen an unused music room. Hana had written the first draft, while Kento and Maya were helping her check the dialogue. Their teacher asked them to be especially careful with pronouns and promises, because the audience would need to understand who was responsible for each action. In the opening scene, two characters stood outside the locked room. The first character, Emi, wanted to ask for permission to enter. The second, Sora, had already spoken to the school manager. The script said, ‘She promised that she would bring the key on Friday.’ Kento read the line and immediately assumed that Emi had made the promise. Maya pointed out that the sentence alone did not identify which girl had promised anything.

Paragraph 2

The group searched Hana’s handwritten notes from the day she had created the first draft. Beside the opening scene, she had written, ‘Sora will ask the manager for the spare key. Emi will prepare the posters.’ This showed what Hana had originally intended, although the dialogue still needed to be rewritten for the audience. Kento suggested changing the line to, ‘Sora promised that she would bring the key on Friday.’ The teacher agreed that naming Sora removed the confusion. However, she asked whether the promise itself had been confirmed by the school manager. Hana explained that Sora had only said she would ask for the key. Nobody had yet agreed to lend it. The group then changed the sentence again: ‘Sora said that she would ask the manager for the key on Friday.’ It was less dramatic but accurate.

Paragraph 3

On the next rehearsal day, the actors reached a later scene in which a third character, Riku, was waiting near the library. The original script said, ‘He had told her that the room was ready, but she did not believe him.’ Two actors were unsure whose message was being described. The teacher asked the group to draw a simple timeline. On Thursday, Riku had checked the room and found that the chairs were ready, but the lights were still being repaired. He had then sent Emi a message saying that the chairs were ready. On Friday, Emi arrived and discovered that the lights were not working yet. She had not misunderstood Riku’s words; the script had exaggerated what he had said. The class changed the line to mention the chairs rather than the entire room.

During the final rehearsal, the teacher asked the actors to make the ending more interesting without changing the facts. Maya suggested adding a moment when the students disagreed about whether to open the room immediately. Emi argued that students should be allowed inside as soon as the chairs were arranged. Sora replied that the school manager still needed to check the lights and the emergency exit. Riku admitted that he had assumed the repairs would be finished by Friday, but he had never received a final confirmation. The disagreement helped the audience understand why an early promise might create confusion. In the revised ending, the three characters decided to prepare their posters and wait for a clear message from the manager. They did not enter the room simply because they hoped it was safe.

Paragraph 5

At the festival, the performance went smoothly. Several visitors told the club that they liked the characters because each had a different reason for acting as they did. After the show, Hana compared the first draft with the final one. The story had not become longer simply by adding complicated grammar. Instead, the students had made the relationships between actions, promises, and evidence clearer. They had learned to use reported speech carefully, to choose pronouns that had clear referents, and to distinguish an expectation from a confirmed fact. Kento admitted that he had first read the script too quickly and assumed he understood every ‘he’ and ‘she.’ He now knew that when a sentence could refer to two people, the safest solution was often to name the person directly. The teacher called this good writing because readers no longer had to guess.

Paragraph 1

Paragraph 2

Paragraph 3

Paragraph 4

Paragraph 5
