1. observe birds / observe a change
2. notice a mistake / notice that …
3. detect a signal / detect a small change
4. discover a new fact / identify a person discover that …

Read
The environmental club observed the water level in a small stream every Friday. One student noticed that the marks on the measuring board were difficult to read. A new sensor detected several changes during the night, but its readings were not automatically reliable. The students discovered that the sensor had been installed at the wrong height. After correcting its position, they identified one period when the water rose following heavy rain. The teacher asked the group to separate what they had directly observed from what the equipment had detected and what they could reasonably conclude. The report explained that a single unusual reading should be checked before it is presented as a new fact.
