NEW TREASURE(ニュートレジャー)Stage3 Lesson9 Read「Friendship Between Turkey and Japan」関連の無料英語教材。

The sailors rescued after the accident …
Having read the records, she corrected the date.

[1] One episode often discussed in the friendship between Japan and Türkiye took place in 1890. The Ottoman ship Ertuğrul had visited Japan and was sailing home when it met dangerous weather near Kushimoto in Wakayama. The ship sank, and local people helped rescue survivors. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes how the disaster and rescue became part of the relationship between the two countries.

[2] Many years later, in 1985, Japanese citizens needed to leave Tehran during a dangerous period of the Iran-Iraq War. Türkiye arranged assistance involving aircraft. The Turkish Embassy in Tokyo states that 215 Japanese citizens were evacuated with Turkish help. The two events happened in different circumstances, but both are remembered as examples of help during an emergency.

[3] Some readers connect these stories and describe them as evidence of a long friendship. However, the fact that a rescue is remembered does not prove that every person who acted decades later had exactly the same motive. Historians can examine records about what happened and who helped, but a particular individual’s reason for acting requires its own evidence.

[4] To understand the relationship, students should separate the verified events from interpretations about their meaning. They should also check what a number counts: passengers aboard a ship, survivors rescued, and citizens evacuated are different groups. Careful history does not make a story less meaningful. It makes the story more trustworthy.

[1] Friendship between people and the formal establishment of diplomatic relations do not necessarily begin in the same year. The Ertuğrul disaster took place in 1890, while Japan and the Republic of Türkiye formally established diplomatic relations in 1924. Therefore, 2024 marked one hundred years of diplomatic relations. It was not the hundredth anniversary of the shipwreck.

[2] Over the decades, the countries have cooperated in various areas. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has described trade, cultural exchanges, and assistance during disasters. After the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, Türkiye sent an emergency aid team to Japan. Following the earthquakes in Türkiye in February 2023, Japan sent emergency assistance. These were separate operations under different circumstances.

[3] At a fictional school, students prepared a timeline for an international exchange. A group member mistakenly labeled 1890 as the year diplomatic relations began. Another student checked the official history and corrected it to 1924. The team kept the 1890 event on the timeline but added a clear explanation that a rescue could help shape a relationship before formal diplomatic ties were established.

[4] The students concluded that the different categories mattered. A rescue at sea, an evacuation, an agreement between governments, and emergency disaster assistance should be described with precise dates. That distinction made their presentation more accurate without reducing its message about cooperation.

[1] Students at a fictional international club wrote a short presentation about Japan and Türkiye. The first version stated that the 1985 evacuation happened only because Japanese people had rescued Ottoman sailors in 1890. The teacher asked whether their sources could establish that single cause. The students had found records of both events, but they had not found evidence about the motives of everyone involved.

[2] The group compared an account from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs with a message from the Turkish Embassy in Tokyo. These documents included dates, places, and examples of help. The students rewrote the first paragraph so it described each event separately and then explained that the two were remembered as signs of friendship.

[3] Another student noticed a problem with numbers in the draft. Some figures referred to people traveling aboard a ship, others to survivors, and others to people evacuated from a country many years later. The group decided to write the unit next to every number. It also checked whether any quotations came directly from a government statement or had been written by the students themselves.

[4] The presentation ended with a question: ‘How might the memory of assistance encourage cooperation today?’ The students did not pretend to know what every person in the past had been thinking. By keeping the dates and sources clear, they made the story easier to understand. Their final speech was less dramatic, but it was more accurate.
