Not all students passed the exam. It was Ken who found the key. Never have I seen such a view.
It was Ken who found the key.(鍵を見つけたのはケンだった)。
Not all the students passed.(全員が合格したわけではない)。
None of the students passed.(生徒は誰も合格しなかった)。
Never have I seen such a beautiful view.(こんな美しい景色は一度も見たことがない)。
It is / was … that / who …
Ken met Yuki at the station yesterday.。 It was Ken who met Yuki at the station yesterday.。場所at the stationを強調:It was at the station that Ken met Yuki yesterday.。 It was yesterday that Ken met Yuki at the station.。
It was Tom that broke the window.(窓を割ったのはトムだった)はTomを強調する構文です。一方、It is important that you study every day.(毎日勉強することが大切だ)はthat節を後ろに置いた形式主語の構文であり、importantを取り出して残りを元の文に戻す操作はできません。
部分否定:not all・not every・not both・not always
- Not all students like math.(すべての生徒が数学を好きなわけではない)。
- Not every student agrees.(すべての生徒が賛成しているわけではない)。
- Not both answers are correct.(二つとも正しいわけではない)。
- She is not always busy.(彼女はいつも忙しいとは限らない)。
- Expensive products are not necessarily better.(高価な製品が必ずしもよいとは限らない)。
Not all students passed.
全体否定:none・neither・no one・never
- None of the students passed.(その生徒たちは一人も合格しなかった)。
- Neither answer is correct.(二つの答えのどちらも正しくない)。
- No one knew the answer.(誰も答えを知らなかった)。
- He never drinks coffee.(彼はコーヒーを飲むことがない)。
Not both are correct.とNeither is correct. またnot always(いつもとは限らない)とnever(一度もない)も区別が必要です。
few / a few・little / a littleと否定のニュアンス
Few students understood the question.(理解できた生徒はほとんどいなかった)。A few students understood the question.(何人かは理解できた)。
I have never seen such a place. Never have I seen such a place.。通常:She rarely goes there. Rarely does she go there.。
Not until …
I did not realize my mistake until I got home. → Not until I got home did I realize my mistake.(家に帰って初めて間違いに気づいた)。not untilに続く従属節I got homeは通常の語順です。 Not until did I get home I realized …
Only after / Only whenなどの倒置
Only after I read the instructions did I understand the rule.(説明書を読んで初めて規則を理解した)。通常はI understood the rule only after I read the instructions.。 Only Ken knew the answer.(ケンだけが答えを知っていた)では、Only Kenが文の主語なので、通常は倒置しません。
Neither / Nor
A: I don’t like horror movies. B: Neither do I.(私も好きではない)。A: She can’t swim. B: Neither can I.(私も泳げない)。A: He isn’t ready. B: Nor am I.(私も準備できていない)。
He was so tired that he fell asleep. → So tired was he that he fell asleep.(彼はとても疲れていたので眠ってしまった)。She ran so quickly that I couldn’t catch her. → So quickly did she run that I couldn’t catch her.。

- Not all the students passed.〔

- So tired he was that he fell asleep.〔文頭So tiredの倒置を使った標準形に訂正〕
- It was at the library that I studied yesterday.:場所の強調にはthat。
Not all the students passed.
- Not both answers are correct.:「両方正しいわけではない」という部分否定を明確にする。Neither answer is correct. 元のBoth answers aren’t correct. Cambridge Dictionary:neitherとboth+notの用法を参照。
- Never have I seen such a view.:have+Iの順。
- Rarely does she go out on Sundays.:does+she+原形。
- Not until he came home did he realize the mistake.:
- Only after I read the letter did I understand the news.:only after以下の主節を倒置。
- A: I don’t like coffee. B: Neither do I.:否定への同意はNeither+do+I。
- So tired was he that he fell asleep.:So tiredを前に出しwas+he。

Never have I …
Q. It is … thatはすべて強調構文ですか? A. いいえ。It is surprising that …
