to do |
| persuade | 人を説得して判断・行動に影響する | persuade someone to do / that … |
| be convinced | 本人が納得・確信している | I’m convinced that … |
convince A to do は誤り?
現代英語ではconvince someone to doも自然です。
I am convinced that …

A student council of eighteen members discussed whether the school library should open for an extra hour every Thursday. Before the presentation, nine members supported the idea and the others were either opposed or undecided. A student prepared a convincing presentation with a chart of current library use and comments from several pupils. She hoped to convince the council that a longer opening time would be useful. After listening, thirteen members said that they supported the proposal. The change in support suggested that the presentation had influenced opinions, but the council had not recorded how each individual voted before and after it. The chairperson explained that the figures alone could not show exactly which people had changed their minds. The students also needed information about staff availability and costs. They decided to ask the library manager for those details rather than assume that the new arrangement would be easy to run. The school had not officially approved the longer hours. One member wrote that the speech was convincing, but another said that he was not yet convinced that the plan was financially practical. The council planned to review the matter once it received further information.

Read B|
Read B|
For a school festival, students proposed a new method of sorting used paper and plastic after the event. Twenty students attended an information session about the plan. The speaker showed a chart explaining how separate boxes might reduce the amount of mixed waste. Fourteen students said they believed the plan would be useful. The group described the chart as convincing because it was clearly labelled, but the figures came from a small practice activity rather than a full festival. The organizers then asked for volunteers to help set up the boxes and explain the rules to visitors. Only two students agreed to volunteer at that time. One student said, “I am convinced that the idea makes sense, but I cannot help next week because I have another commitment.” The organizers understood that believing a plan was good did not necessarily mean agreeing to take action. They wanted to persuade more students to participate but did not assume that fourteen supporters were fourteen volunteers. The committee also needed to check whether the school would allow the boxes to be placed at the entrance. No final date for the activity had been approved. The team planned to ask for additional help after confirming the location and schedule.
