NEW TREASURE Stage3のReadで「in the end of the meeting」と書くと、最終結果と終了時点を取り違えています。at the end of は会議・授業などの終わりの時点、in the end は経緯を経た最終結果、by the end of はその時点までの完了・期限を示します。at first は最初の状態、first of all は説明の順序です。慶英会独自40問・全解答・和訳・初見英文2題で時系列と過去完了の理解を確かめます。

① at firstは後の変化と対比する
At first, we thought the plan was difficult, but later we understood it. のように、初めの状態と後から変わった判断を対比します。発表で「第一に」と順序を示すFirst of allとは違います。
② in the endは経緯の後に到達した結論
We discussed several options. In the end, we chose Plan B. は何度かの検討の末にB案にしたことを述べます。in the end of the meetingではなく、終了時点を言うならat the end of the meetingにします。
③ at the end ofは特定の出来事の最後の時点
At the end of the lesson, the teacher collected our answers. は授業が終わるときの行動です。時刻表や行事の流れを読む際に、どの出来事の終わりなのかを明確にします。
④ by the end ofは締切・完了の期限
By the end of Thursday, the students had checked all the links. は木曜終了時までに確認が完了していたという意味です。at the end of Thursdayはその終わりの時点での出来事を述べるため、本文が伝えたいことを考えます。
⑤ 過去完了had＋過去分詞と組み合わせる
When the meeting started on Friday, the team had already submitted the report. のように、過去の基準時点以前の完了にはhad＋過去分詞が便利です。By the end of Thursday, they had submitted it. は期限と完了の組合せです。
⑥ 「最初の予定」「締切」「最終決定」「実績」は別
At first the council planned to print.と書かれても、実際に印刷した証拠にはなりません。In the end it chose a digital guide.と決めても、すでに全員に送信したとは限りません。Stage3の初見Readでは行動の時点と完了・未完了の記録を確認します。
独自40問の演習の進め方
- Q1〜12：最初の状態・最終結果・終了時点・期限までの完了を選ぶ。
- Q13〜22：前置詞・慣用表現・過去完了の語順を訂正する。
- Q23〜32：学校行事の時系列を和文英訳する。
