結論:NEW TREASURE(ニュートレジャー)Stage 2の語彙を増やすときは、helpful/helpless、careful/careless、useful/useless、hopeful/hopeless、harmful/harmlessのような接尾辞-ful/-lessの意味に注目すると、初見の単語を考える手がかりになります。ただしunhelpful(役立たない)とhelpless(無力な)は同じ意味ではありません。

  • careful/careless:注意深い/不注意な。
  • useful/useless:役立つ/役に立たない。
  • hopeful/hopeless:希望がある/望みがないと感じる。
  • harmful/harmless:有害な/害のない。
  • meaningful/meaningless:意味・意義がある/ない。
  • powerful/powerless:力が強い/力がない。

useful/careful/hopefulの末尾は原則-fulであり、usefullと綴るのは誤りです。

She is careful. She checks the information carefully. The explanation was useful.

At a fictional junior high school, volunteers prepared a guide for an English science event. The first version was useful in some places, but it had several unclear instructions. The teacher praised the group for being careful with the facts and encouraged them to rewrite a few labels. Students wanted the guide to be meaningful rather than simply long. During rehearsal, Hana was helpful because she checked the room numbers and explained the timetable to new volunteers. Ken felt helpless for a moment when he found a technical problem he did not know how to solve. The teacher explained that helpful and helpless were not simple opposites: one word described giving useful support, and the other described being unable to act effectively in a situation. Another student suggested using a demonstration that might be harmful without proper safety equipment. The teacher refused the unsafe plan and replaced it with a harmless model approved by the school. The students learned that words ending in -ful and -less could describe important differences in meaning, but that they should still check how each complete word was used. After the event, some visitors said the final guide was clear. The team was hopeful that it could improve future materials. However, the class did not measure improved test results or claim that every visitor had understood every instruction. Its report described what had actually been done and what questions remained.

  • Q33. Why did the group revise the first guide?
  • Q34. What attitude did the teacher praise?
  • Q35. Why was Hana described as helpful?
  • Q36. Why did Ken feel helpless?
  • Q37. What kind of demonstration was rejected?
  • Q38. What kind of model replaced the demonstration?
  • Q39. What did students want the guide to be instead of simply long?
  • Q40. Did the group measure improved test results?
