自動詞と他動詞の決め手は目的語
The sun rose.は太陽自身が昇り、目的語を取りません。He raised his hand.は何を上げたか（his hand）を目的語で示します。同様にThe dog was lying on the mat.は犬が横たわる状態、Yui was laying the map on the desk.は地図を置く動作です。
lieの過去形layと、別の動詞layを区別
The cat lay on the sofa yesterday.のlayはlie（横になる）の過去形です。一方、Ken laid the book on the table.のlaidはlay（置く）の過去形。表面上似ているため、後ろの目的語の有無と時制を確認してください。
うそをつくlieは別の活用
He lied about the date.は『日付についてうそをついた』です。ただし人が間違えた情報を述べたからといって、意図的にうそをついたとは限りません。本文の根拠を確認し、『誤解』と『虚偽』を区別しましょう。

5．校内の朝の催し・オリジナル英文8問（Q33〜Q40）
At a fictional middle school, students prepared a small morning event. The sun rose above the nearby hills before the volunteers arrived. Ken raised the school flag with permission from a teacher. His friend Yui raised her hand during a meeting to ask when the visitors would come. The teacher explained that rise described movement without an object, while raise was followed by the thing that someone lifted.
Later, the group found a map lying on the floor. Hana laid the map on a table so that visitors could read it. A small dog was lying on a mat near a volunteer, but the class did not touch or move the animal. The teacher asked students to compare ‘the dog lay on the mat yesterday’ and ‘Hana laid the map on the table yesterday’.
One volunteer said that the entrance fee had risen, but the official notice showed no change. He had misunderstood an older message and corrected his words. The group then checked the notice rather than claiming that someone had lied. A mistake made by accident and a deliberate lie were different, even though the verb lie could describe a false statement.
After the event, students wrote a short report using rise, raise, lie, and lay. The teacher checked the past and past participle forms. The report included actual actions from the fictional event but did not claim that all visitors had learned the difference, because the class had not measured everyone’s understanding.
