Kyoto, which I visited last year, …

- everything that I learned:everythingなどが先行詞。
- all that we need:allの後ろをthat節が説明。
- the best book that I have read:最上級bestを含む名詞句。
- the first map that we used:序数詞firstを含む名詞句。
- the only guide that we have:onlyで限定される名詞句。
- the people and things that matter:人と物が混ざる先行詞。
My brother, who lives in Kyoto, is a teacher. The library, which opened in 2000, … My brother, that lives …
The map that Ken drewではKenがdrewの主語なのでthatは目的格で省略できます。The map that shows the entranceではthatがshowsの主語なので、that一語だけを省略できません。

A fictional English class planned a small exhibition about school history. Each group collected facts from the school’s official notices and older photographs that the school had permission to use. The teacher said that everything the group published should be checked. One student wrote, ‘All what we need is a good picture,’ but the teacher suggested, ‘All that we need is a good picture,’ and explained why the structure was different.
Ken found the first map that had been kept in the classroom archive. He wrote, ‘This is the first map that the school used.’ In this sentence, that introduced a restrictive clause about a map. Yui chose a different map and wrote, ‘The map that shows the old entrance is still useful.’ The teacher asked whether the two occurrences of that could simply be omitted. Ken’s that was the object of used, but Yui’s that was the subject of shows.
Later, the students added information about a teacher and a computer that had helped the school library’s early project. Their teacher explained that that can be a convenient relative word when one description includes both a person and a thing. The class also practised a different kind of relative clause. It wrote, ‘The school library, which was opened many years ago, is used today.’ The commas introduced additional information, so that could not replace which there.
During the presentation, visitors asked which documents were verified. Some students gave different opinions about the most interesting photograph, but the team did not claim everyone preferred the same photograph. At the end, the group prepared a list of facts that could be checked against the original sources and made a separate note of questions for future research.
- Q33. What did the school require before using old photographs?
- Q34. How was ‘All what we need’ corrected?
- Q35. Which map did Ken find?
- Q36. In ‘the first map that the school used’, is that a subject or object?
- Q37. In ‘the map that shows the old entrance’, is that a subject or object?
- Q38. What two kinds of antecedent did ‘a teacher and a computer’ contain?
- Q39. Why did the sentence about the library use which after commas?
- Q40. Did the group claim everyone liked the same photograph?
