Row B, Seat 5(B列5番席)、assigned seat(指定された席)、reserved(確保された)、unassigned(未割当)、updated ticket(更新券)、backstage(舞台裏)。

For a school English presentation, the hall had three rows labeled A, B, and C. Each row contained eight numbered seats, from one to eight. Row A was nearest the stage, Row B was in the middle, and Row C was at the back. A visitor’s ticket read ‘Row B, Seat 5.’ Mei explained that this meant the fifth seat in the middle row, not the fifth row. The teacher also reminded visitors that a row letter and a seat number were two different pieces of information.

  1. How many rows were in the hall?
  2. How many seats were in each row?
  3. What was the total seating capacity?
  4. Which row was nearest the stage?
  5. Where was Row B?
  6. What did ‘Row B, Seat 5’ mean?

At another school event, the same-sized hall had twenty-four seats. Two seats in the front row, A1 and A2, were reserved for teachers. Twenty visitor tickets were issued, each showing a different seat. The other two seats remained unassigned. The teacher explained that the hall contained twenty-four seats, but that did not mean twenty-four visitor tickets had been issued. The school had not yet checked how many ticket holders would arrive on the day.

  6. Does the text say how many ticket holders arrived?

On Friday, the school checked the hall before a Saturday performance. Seat B5 had a broken chair and could not be used. The visitor who originally held the ticket for B5 was offered Seat C8 instead. Seat C8 had not been assigned to anyone else. The school sent the visitor an updated ticket on Friday. The original ticket still showed B5, but the teacher told the visitor to follow the new assignment. The performance time did not change, and no other visitor needed to change seats.

  2. Why was B5 unavailable?
  3. Which new seat was offered?

The final event notice explained three kinds of passes. A visitor ticket allowed the holder to enter the audience area and sit in the assigned seat. A performer pass allowed students who were acting to enter the stage area. A helper pass allowed named volunteers to enter the backstage room with a teacher. Doors for visitors opened at two thirty, and the performance began at three. A ticket saying ‘Row C, Seat 4’ did not give the holder permission to go backstage. Visitors were told to show their tickets at the audience entrance.

  2. What did a performer pass allow?
  3. Who could use a helper pass backstage?
  4. When did the visitor doors open?
  5. When did the performance start?
  6. Did a ‘Row C, Seat 4’ ticket allow backstage entry?

FAQ
