文法20問の部分点
The grammar section contained twenty questions. Each fully correct answer earned two points, a partly correct answer earned one point, and an incorrect answer earned no points. Ken answered twelve questions fully correctly, three partly correctly, and five incorrectly. The teacher checked that the counts added up to twenty. Ken’s total score was twenty-seven points out of forty. One student said that fifteen questions had been correct, but the teacher explained that a partly correct answer was not the same as a fully correct one.

英作文の評価基準
Rina’s English paragraph was marked in four categories: content, grammar, vocabulary, and organization. Each category was worth five points. She received four for content, three for grammar, five for vocabulary, and four for organization. Her total was sixteen out of twenty. She had the highest vocabulary score possible, but that did not mean her entire paragraph received full marks. The teacher suggested looking at the grammar comments before the next assignment, without promising that any one exercise would guarantee a higher grade.

読解の記述問題の部分点
The reading section had six questions, each worth five points. Four answers were fully correct and earned five points each. One answer had the right idea but missed an important condition, so it received two points. The last answer was incorrect and received zero. Mei’s reading score was therefore twenty-two out of thirty. She wanted to improve the answer that had earned two points. The teacher told her to reread the question and include both the required facts next time.

三分野の合計を計算
After the test, the report showed three section scores for one student: grammar, twenty-eight out of forty; reading, twenty-two out of thirty; and writing, sixteen out of twenty. The total possible score was ninety, and the student had earned sixty-six points. The report did not say that the three sections were equally difficult. It also did not give the class average. The teacher explained that the maximum score for each section mattered when comparing performance and that a lower point total did not always mean a lower percentage.
