30秒で分かる｜news・scissors・a pair of scissorsはなぜ動詞が違う？

名詞そのものと、数えるための単位は別

scissorsを一つ欲しいとき、学校英語ではa pair of scissorsが基本です。はさみには二つの刃がありますが、英語では一つの道具も複数形scissorsと呼びます。だからthese scissors areと言える一方、道具を「一組」としてとらえるa pair of scissorsではisになります。two scissorsではなくtwo pairs of scissorsとすると、二組だと誤解なく伝えられます。

眼鏡のglassesとコップのglassを混同しない

glassesは「眼鏡」の意味では複数形で、a pair of glassesは一組の眼鏡です。一方、a glass of waterのglassは飲み物を入れるコップとして数えられます。同じ綴りでも意味が違えば数え方が変わるため、名詞の形だけで一律に判断しないことが重要です。

information・advice・equipmentは数えられないが内容は複数にできる

informationやadviceそのものは通常不可算で、one information／three advices／two equipmentsとはしません。「三つの情報」はthree pieces of information、「二つの助言」はtwo pieces of adviceのように単位を補います。一方、設備を個別に数えるときはtwo machinesやthree devicesなど、数えられる具体的な名詞に置き換える方法もあります。
