結論:NEW TREASURE(ニュートレジャー)Stage 2の助動詞を使った英文では、must be(強い推論)、can’t be(強い否定推論)、may/might/could be(可能性)を区別します。He must be at school. He might be at school. またmust(義務)、mustn’t(禁止)、don’t have to(義務なし)も別です。

must・can’t・may・mightを判断する3つの観点

  • 助動詞の語順:must/might/may/can’tの後に動詞原形を置く。

mustn’tとcan’t beは違う

You mustn’t enter. He can’t be in the room. You don’t have to enter.

The new plan might help students. The new plan will double everyone’s grades.

At a fictional middle school, students were preparing an English information desk. Room 3 had a sign saying CLOSED and the door was locked. Yui said that it must be closed. Her teacher agreed that the evidence supported a strong conclusion, but asked her to verify the school schedule before directing visitors elsewhere.

Ken could not find the spare maps. He said they might be in the library, but no one had checked. The class did not tell visitors that the maps were definitely there. Students needed to distinguish a possibility from a fact.

Before the event, the teacher reminded all volunteers that they must follow the safety rules. They mustn’t enter the equipment room without permission. A separate notice said the main hall might not be available tomorrow. That sentence described uncertainty about the room, not a rule that forbade entry.

During rehearsal, the students compared ‘The room must be closed’, ‘The maps might be in the library’, and ‘You mustn’t enter’. The first was a strong inference, the second a possibility, and the third a prohibition. The group revised its guide so that it did not turn unverified guesses into facts.

  • Q33. What evidence suggested that Room 3 was closed?
  • Q34. What did the teacher ask students to check too?
  • Q35. Where might the spare maps be?
  • Q36. Had anyone checked the library?
  • Q37. What did volunteers have to follow?
  • Q38. What was prohibited?
  • Q39. What did ‘might not be available’ mean?
  • Q40. Match must, might and mustn’t to their meanings.

mustn’tはcan’t beの否定推測と同じですか?

違います。mustn’tは通常禁止、can’t beは強い否定推論です。
