  • 1902年:『The Tale of Peter Rabbit』が商業出版された。

Introduction→Timeline→Explanation→Closing

first/later/before/afterを使うと、音だけを聞く相手にも話の流れが伝わります。

Read 1|Radio Report: A Children’s Author Who Studied Nature(385

Good afternoon, everyone. Welcome to our school radio programme about writers. Today’s example is Beatrix Potter, a British author and illustrator known for children’s books. This is an original learning script based on public biographical information, not a recording from a real radio station. We will pay attention to the order of events and the different kinds of work Potter did during her life.

According to the official Peter Rabbit website, Beatrix Potter was born in London on July 28, 1866. She enjoyed studying nature as well as drawing and painting. Those interests later influenced her illustrated stories. Describing her only as a writer would leave out part of her work: she also illustrated books and showed interest in the natural world. When we write a biography, we should not reduce a person’s life to one simple label.

In 1893, she sent an illustrated letter to a child named Noel. The character of Peter Rabbit first appeared in that letter, according to the official timeline. A letter that inspired a story is not the same as a commercially published book, however. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was first commercially published in 1902 after earlier rejections and privately printed editions.

The official history also records that Potter created a Peter Rabbit doll and registered it in 1903. This detail shows that she did not work only on writing and pictures. She took an active interest in how her creations might be presented in other forms. Students should be careful to distinguish the dates of the letter, the book, and the toy.

In 1905, Potter purchased Hill Top Farm in the Lake District. The official biography describes the area as important in her later life. She became involved in farming and land conservation as well as continuing her creative interests. She died in 1943. We should be respectful when discussing the end of a real person’s life and use accurate sources rather than inventing personal details.

What can we learn from Potter’s story? A writer may draw on everyday observations, revise work, and continue learning in different fields. We can enjoy stories while also asking how they were created. If you prepare a short English biography, start with reliable dates, use past-tense verbs correctly, and explain what the person did without copying the original fictional characters’ conversations.

  • Q1. Which writer is discussed in this original radio script?
  • Q2. In which city was she born?
  • Q3. What was her birth year?

  • Q5. What did she send in 1893?
  • Q6. Did the commercial publication happen in 1893?

  • Q8. What item did Potter create and register in 1903?
  • Q9. Which farm did Potter purchase in 1905?
  • Q10. In which year did Potter die?
  • Q11. Why does the passage mention nature and conservation?
  • Q12. Summarize her life in two English sentences.

Read 2|A Fictional School Radio Team Checks a Biography(400

A fictional group of junior high school students planned a short English radio broadcast about the life of an author. They selected Beatrix Potter as an example because they could consult an official biographical timeline. Their teacher told them that a radio programme should sound natural, but its factual content still needed evidence. Students were asked to write their own explanations and avoid copying long passages from books.

The group first created a list of years: 1866, 1893, 1902, 1903, 1905, and 1943. Hana prepared questions for the presenters, while Ken checked the dates against the official Peter Rabbit information site. Another student made a drawing of a notebook and a paintbrush instead of reproducing protected character illustrations. The team had to decide which details were important enough to include in a two-minute script.

Ken found a sentence in their draft saying that Potter published The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1893. He pointed out that 1893 was the year of the illustrated letter to Noel, while 1902 was the year of the commercial publication. The students corrected the sentence before recording. They learned that a small change in the wording of a historical timeline could create a serious misunderstanding.

Next, Hana wanted to say that Potter’s fame had come only from her writing. Her partner reminded her that Potter was also an illustrator and interested in nature and conservation. They changed the sentence to describe those activities without claiming that she was the greatest writer in the world. A phrase such as ‘my favourite author’ could be an honest opinion, but ‘everyone’s favourite author’ would need evidence that they did not have.

The group then practiced reading aloud with clear pauses. One student read too quickly, and another mispronounced the date nineteen hundred and two. Their teacher suggested dividing the script into an introduction, timeline, explanation, and conclusion. The students were told to mark where each speaker would take a turn, so that listeners could follow the sequence of events without seeing the written text.

At the end, the class checked whether the programme was useful. Several volunteer listeners could name the main dates, but the group had not tested the entire school. Its final report did not claim that every student had learned the biography. It said that a short, accurate broadcast could encourage listeners to explore reliable sources and read more about authors whose work interested them.

  • Q13. What form of English presentation did the group prepare?
  • Q14. Which author did they select as an example?
  • Q15. Who checked the historical dates?
  • Q16. How many years did the group put on its initial list?
  • Q17. What did they avoid copying into their handout?
  • Q18. What error did Ken find about 1893?
  • Q19. Why was ‘famous only for her writing’ incomplete?
  • Q20. Why did they avoid saying ‘everyone’s favourite author’?
  • Q21. What date did one student mispronounce?
  • Q22. What four sections did the teacher suggest?
  • Q23. Could the team claim that the entire school learned the dates?
  • Q24. Write a two-sentence English summary.
