A Cloudy Observation Night

The astronomy club at Willowfield Junior High had planned an evening observation on the school roof. On Wednesday, twelve students arrived after their afternoon lessons. Their teacher, Ms. Sato, checked the weather before they went upstairs. Thick clouds covered the sky, and it had already started raining. For safety, she decided that the club would not use the roof that evening.

Daichi was disappointed. He had prepared a small telescope and a list of objects to observe. He said, “If the sky were clear tonight, we could look at the stars from the roof.” Ms. Sato explained that he was imagining a different situation. The sky was not clear, so the group could not carry out the outdoor observation as planned. She reminded everyone that his sentence did not mean the sky was expected to become clear that night.

Rina wanted to know whether the club could still learn something. The teacher suggested using a classroom computer to study a model of the night sky. The students compared drawings of several constellations and practiced explaining their positions in English. They worked indoors from six until seven. Daichi said, “If we had a larger telescope, we could see more details.” The school did not have a larger telescope, but the sentence helped him explain a wish rather than a plan for that evening.

At the end of the meeting, Ms. Sato proposed trying an outdoor observation on Friday if the weather improved. She wrote, “If the sky clears on Friday, we will meet on the roof at six.” She did not promise that the weather would improve. The Friday observation was a possible future plan, not a confirmed event. If the sky remained cloudy, they would study indoors again.

On Thursday, a message from the school office said that the roof would be open for club activities on Friday if there was no rain. Daichi read the message carefully. The office had given conditional permission; it had not announced that the club would definitely go outside. He wrote two lines in his notebook: “If it were clear now, we could observe.” and “If it clears on Friday, we will observe.”

When Friday came, the sky was still cloudy and the roof was not used. The group stayed in the classroom. Rina said that the two kinds of if-sentences had helped her separate what was true now from what might happen later. She also learned that a permission with a condition was not a guarantee that the condition would be met.

FAQ

If the sky were clear tonightは現在の現実に反する想像です。
