NEW TREASURE（ニュートレジャー）Third Edition Stage 2 Lesson 1の感嘆文は「なんて〜なのでしょう」という驚きや感動を表す英文です。What a beautiful day!とHow beautiful this day is!はどちらも感動を表しますが、Whatの後ろでは名詞の有無と単数・複数が重要で、Howの後ろでは形容詞・副詞と主語・動詞の語順が重要です。定期テストでは空所補充だけでなく、平叙文から感嘆文への書き換え、日本語からの英作文、疑問文との区別が問われます。本記事ではオリジナル36問、模範解答、誤答診断、7日間の復習方法を掲載します。採用版・学校の授業進度によって出題範囲が異なるため、範囲表を優先してください。

- What＋a/an＋形容詞＋単数名詞：What a beautiful flower!（なんて美しい花だろう）。
- What＋形容詞＋複数名詞：What beautiful flowers!（なんて美しい花々だろう）。
- What＋形容詞＋不可算名詞：What exciting news!（なんてわくわくする知らせだろう）。
- How＋形容詞＋主語＋動詞：How beautiful the flowers are!（その花々はなんて美しいんだろう）。
- How＋副詞＋主語＋動詞：How fast he runs!（彼はなんて速く走るんだろう）。
感嘆文では主語と動詞を省いたWhat a beautiful day!のような形と、What a beautiful day it is!のような主語と動詞を含む形の両方が用いられます。学校の並べ替えでは、与えられた語をすべて用いるよう指定されている場合、主語と動詞を勝手に省かないようにしてください。
単数名詞：What a …! とWhat an …!
What a nice picture!（なんてすてきな絵だろう）。What an interesting book!（なんて面白い本だろう）。a/anは名詞の単数・可算性に加えて、続く音が母音で始まるかなどで決まります。What a interesting book!は誤り。What an old building!のoldは母音で始まるためanを使います。
複数名詞・不可算名詞ではa/anを付けない
What beautiful pictures! / What useful information!。picturesは複数名詞、informationは不可算名詞なのでa/anを付けません。What a beautiful pictures!、What an useful information!は誤りです。newsも通常は不可算名詞なので、What surprising news!という形にします。
How＋形容詞とHow＋副詞の違い
How kind you are!（あなたはなんて親切なのだろう）。kindは人の性質を表す形容詞です。How carefully she drives!（彼女はなんて注意深く運転するのだろう）。carefullyは運転の仕方を説明する副詞です。How＋形容詞・副詞の後に、通常の主語＋動詞の順番が続きます。How are you kind!は標準的な感嘆文の語順とは異なります。
疑問文How …?と感嘆文How …!は語順と目的が異なる
疑問：How beautiful is the picture?（その絵はどのくらい美しいのですか）。感嘆：How beautiful the picture is!（その絵はなんて美しいのだろう）。感嘆文ではHow beautifulの後ろがthe picture isという平叙文に近い語順になります。語尾の感嘆符!だけを付け替えるのではなく、語順を確認してください。
WhatとHowの書き換えを理解する
- The flower is beautiful. → What a beautiful flower it is! / How beautiful the flower is!
- They are wonderful pictures. → What wonderful pictures they are! / How wonderful the pictures are!
- He runs fast. → How fast he runs!（副詞fastを強調）
Howの文からWhatの文に書き換える際は、名詞にa/anが必要かどうかを改めて判断します。また、文の意味が変わる書き換えは避けます。たとえばHe runs quickly.をWhat a quick runner he is!にすると人の性質を述べる自然な別表現にはなりますが、主語に関する含意が変わる可能性があるため、試験では指定された構文と元の意味を優先します。
典型的な誤答6つ
- 誤：What beautiful she is! → 正：How beautiful she is!（名詞がない）。
- 誤：How a nice day! → 正：What a nice day!。
- 誤：What a beautiful flowers! → 正：What beautiful flowers!。
- 誤：What a exciting news! → 正：What exciting news!（不可算名詞）。
- 誤：How beautiful is the picture! → 正：How beautiful the picture is!。
- 誤：What an useful idea! → 正：What a useful idea!（usefulは子音の/j/で始まる）。

Q. WhatとHowは意味が同じですか？ A. どちらも驚き・感動を表しますが、名詞のまとまりを強調するか、形容詞・副詞を強調するかで構造が違います。
Q. 感嘆文は必ず最後に!を付けますか？ A. 感嘆文の基本的な練習では!を使いますが、実際の英語では文体や感情の強さによって句読点が変わることもあります。学校の出題形式を優先してください。
Q. 「What a beautiful day!」に主語と動詞がないのはなぜ？ A. 感嘆文では省略されることがあります。What a beautiful day it is!という主語と動詞を含む形も確認しましょう。
