NEW TREASURE Stage2の間接疑問でwhetherとifをどう使い分けるか迷っていませんか。『～かどうか』というYes/Noの間接疑問では両方使える場合が多いですが、whether to do／whether or not／前置詞＋whetherにはwhetherが基本です。一方『もし～なら』という条件はifを使います。慶英会の独自40問・全解答・初見Readで、意味と語順を整理します。

結論｜if・whether・whether or not・whether to
- if／whether＋平叙文語順：I don’t know if the room is open.／I don’t know whether the room is open.（開いているかどうか）。
- whether to＋動詞原形：We haven’t decided whether to go.（行くかどうか未決定）。if toとはしない。
- whether or not＋節：Tell me whether or not you can join.（参加可否を教えて）。if or notと隣接させない。
- 前置詞＋whether：We talked about whether the event should be held.（開催するかについて話した）。
- 条件のif：If it rains, we will stay indoors.（もし雨なら）。この意味をwhetherで置き換えない。
whether … or notは『どちらでもかまわない』という意味にも使えますが、本文で参加できるかどうかを調べる場合は二者択一のYes/Noを示します。条件のifと間接疑問のifは見た目が同じなので、その節が情報を求めるものか、主節の条件なのかを確認してください。

独自英文：The student council at Lakeview School wanted to hold a reading afternoon. On Monday, the council asked the school office whether the library would be available on Friday. The office said it could not confirm the room yet. The members then discussed whether to use the hall instead, but they did not make a decision. The teacher reminded them to find out whether or not the library had been reserved by another club. On Wednesday, the office confirmed that the library was available from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The council decided to use it. The students prepared twenty seats and asked visitors to reply whether they could attend or not. Twelve visitors registered. Because the weather might change, the council also made a simple plan: if heavy rain affected the outdoor entrance, they would use the side entrance. The event was still scheduled for Friday; the report did not claim it had already taken place.

初見英文の全文和訳
レイクビュー校の生徒会は読書会を計画しました。月曜日、学校事務室に図書室が金曜日に使えるかどうか尋ねましたが、まだ確定できないとのことでした。部員は代わりに講堂を使うかどうか話し合いましたが決定しませんでした。先生は図書室がほかの部活動に予約されているかどうか確認するよう注意しました。水曜、事務室は金曜午後3時から5時まで図書室を使えると確認し、生徒会はそこに決定しました。座席を20用意し、来訪者には参加できるかどうか返信するよう頼みました。12人が登録しました。天候が変わるかもしれないので、強い雨が屋外入口に影響すれば側面の入口を使うという条件付きの計画も立てました。行事はまだ金曜の予定で、すでに開催されたとは書かれていませんでした。
7日間で直す典型的な誤答
- I don’t know if is it readyと書いた→I don’t know if it is ready。
- if to goと書いた→whether to go。
- if or not they can attendとした→whether or not they can attend。
- 条件『もし雨なら』をwhether it rainsにした→if it rains。
- 学校の会場を検討したことを、予約が確定したという事実と混同しない。
1〜4日目に各8問を解き、5日目に初見Read8問、6日目に学校行事の申込可否と雨天時の条件を英作文し、7日目に誤答のみ白紙で再テストしてください。
よくある質問
間接疑問のifとwhetherはどちらも使えますか？
Yes/Noの間接疑問ではどちらも使えることが多いですが、文体や後続の語形によってwhetherが必要・好ましい場合があります。
if to doは正しいですか？
標準的には使いません。実行するかどうかという意味のto不定詞の前にはwhetherを使います。
whether or notとif … or notは違いますか？
if … or notは自然ですが、if or not＋節という隣接の形は避け、whether or not＋節を用いるのが基本です。
whetherは条件文のifの代わりになりますか？
通常なりません。『もし雨なら』という条件にはifを使います。
ifの後にwillを置きますか？
未来の単純な条件を表すif節は通常現在形を使います。If it rains, we will …が基本です。
