The data show …
The results suggest …
We cannot conclude that …〜とは結論づけられない
The cause is not clear.
A comparison group
Changing one condition
The evidence is limited.

A school club studied twenty students who volunteered to answer a survey. Ten said they read English for at least thirty minutes a day. Their average vocabulary quiz score was seventy-eight points. The other ten said they usually read for less than ten minutes a day, and their average score was sixty-four points. The students were not assigned randomly to the two groups. The club did not ask how long they had studied English before the survey, whether they used other vocabulary materials, or how many lessons they attended. One student said, ‘Reading for thirty minutes caused the fourteen-point difference.’ The teacher answered, ‘The numbers show a difference between these groups, but they do not prove its cause.’ The club planned to collect more information before making a recommendation.

  1. Q1:How many students took part in the survey?
  2. Q2:How many students were in each group?
  3. Q3:What was the average score of the longer-reading group?

  9. Q9:Which statement is directly supported: A ‘The two groups had different averages’ or B ‘Reading alone caused the difference’?
  10. Q10:Complete: ‘The numbers show a difference, but they do not ___ its cause.’

Two classes tested how quickly identical seeds grew. Class A placed a plant next to a sunny window and gave it one hundred milliliters of water each day. Class B placed another plant in a shaded place and gave it fifty milliliters each day. Both plants started at five centimeters tall. After two weeks, Plant A was fifteen centimeters tall, and Plant B was ten centimeters tall. The classes used the same type of seed and the same type of container, but they changed both the amount of water and the amount of light. A student claimed, ‘The extra water definitely made Plant A grow faster.’ Another student replied, ‘Sunlight also differed, so we cannot tell which change was responsible.’ Their teacher suggested repeating the test and changing only one condition at a time. The two height changes were ten centimeters and five centimeters.

  9. Q19:What did the teacher suggest changing in a new test?
  10. Q20:Which statement is supported: A ‘Plant A grew more’ or B ‘More water definitely caused all the extra growth’?

The school festival welcomed forty visitors last year and seventy visitors this year. This year the organizing team used more posters and sent online notices earlier. However, the weather was also better, and a nearby community event brought more people into the area. The team did not record where visitors had first heard about the festival. An organizer said, ‘Our new posters increased the number of visitors by thirty.’ Another organizer answered, ‘Visitor numbers did rise by thirty, but we do not know why.’ The team agreed that the festival had more visitors this year. It did not agree that the posters alone had caused the increase. For next year, the team wanted to ask visitors which sources of information they had used. That might help the team understand which messages reached people, although even such answers would not automatically prove a single cause.

  1. Q21:How many visitors came last year?
  2. Q22:How many came this year?
  3. Q23:By how many visitors did the total increase?

  10. Q30:Complete: ‘Visitor numbers rose, ___ the cause is still uncertain.’

Ten volunteer students tried a new vocabulary review app for four weeks. Their average quiz score was sixty-five before they started and seventy-three afterward. The students also continued regular English lessons, and some studied with friends. There was no comparison group that studied without the app. The quiz questions at the beginning and end were different, although the teacher tried to make them equally difficult. A student wrote, ‘The app guarantees an eight-point improvement for everyone.’ The teacher corrected the statement. The average of this small group had increased by eight points, but not every individual score increased, and the study had not proved which activity caused the change. The teacher said a larger study with a comparison group and a consistent test method could offer better evidence. The club described the result as promising, not proven.

  1. Q31:How many students took part in the trial?
  2. Q32:How long did they use the app?
  3. Q33:What was the average score before the trial?
  4. Q34:What was the average score after the trial?
  5. Q35:How many points did the group average increase?
  6. Q36:Did every student’s score increase?
  7. Q37:Was there a group that did not use the app?
  8. Q38:Were exactly the same quiz questions used before and after?
  9. Q39:Can the report guarantee an eight-point improvement to every future user?
