by practisingとwith a friendは同じ役割ではない

He improved by practising.は何をすることで改善したかという方法、He practised with his friend.は誰と一緒だったかという同行者を示します。さらにHe practised by himself.は誰にも助けてもらわず一人で練習したことを表します。

by handとby myselfの意味

交通手段として使う場合はby bus / by car / by trainが基本です。特定の乗り物についてon the busやin my carと言う場合はあります。by the busが単なる交通手段としての「バスで」と同じ意味になるとは限りません。徒歩はon footを基本として覚えてください。
