near・nearby・next to・close toの違い｜道案内と位置の無料40問【全解説】

英語の「近く」「隣」に当たるnear・nearby・next to・close toは、意味が似ていても文法が異なります。near the stationは正しい一方、nearby the stationは一般的な学習英語では使いません。a nearby parkは自然ですが、a near parkも距離の意味では不自然です。nearbyは形容詞・副詞、nearは前置詞にもなるという品詞の差を理解する必要があります。慶英会では中高一貫校の学校英語・英検に役立つ40問の独自教材を全解答付きで無料公開します。

near・nearby・next to・close toの違い【早見表】

near the stationとnearbyの違いは品詞

nearは前置詞としてnear the school、near the libraryのように具体的な対象を直接続けられます。一方nearbyは副詞としてIs there a cafe nearby?と単独で使うか、形容詞としてa nearby cafeと名詞の前に置けます。Cambridge Dictionaryの文法項目でもnearbyを前置詞として用いないよう説明しています。

near toは絶対に間違い？

near toも英語に存在し、nearより頻度が低い傾向があります。例えばnear to meのように使うことがあります。near toをすべて誤りとして採点せず、nearby the schoolのような構造の誤りと区別しましょう。本記事は両方自然な場面で無理に一方だけを正答にはしていません。

next toとnear／close toの意味は完全に同じではない

next toは通常「すぐ隣に」という近接・隣接を表します。nearとclose toは比較的広い意味の「近く」です。例えばMy locker is next to yours.ならロッカーの並びを明確に示せます。一方The gym is near our school.では、必ずしも壁が接していることまでは意味しません。地図の説明・校舎案内では位置の精度を考えます。

nearby restaurantが正しく、near restaurantが不自然な理由

距離を表すnearは、名詞の前に直接置いてa near restaurantとは通常しません。そのような意味で形容詞として使えるのがnearbyです。ただしin the near future（近い将来）という定型表現はあるため、nearはどんな場合も名詞の前に置けない、と絶対化しないようにします。

nearは前置詞として直接名詞を取ります。nearbyは前置詞ではないのでnearby the schoolにはしません。

nearbyは副詞として文末に置けます。直後にthe stationなどを続ける前置詞としては使いません。
