結論｜than・the・as … asを見て英文の働きを判断

• 比較級＋than：Route A is shorter than Route B.
• the＋最上級：A is the shortest of the three routes.
• as＋原級＋as：This sign is as clear as that sign.
• not as＋原級＋as：This explanation is not as easy as the other one.
• 不規則変化：good→better→best、bad→worse→worst。

同じ形容詞の比較級と最上級を重ねないことが重要です。shorterにmoreを重ねたり、tallestにmostを重ねたりしないようにしましょう。

比較表現を正しく書く4ステップ

1. 比較する対象が2つか、3つ以上の中の1つかを確認する。
2. thanがあるなら比較級、of the threeなら最上級を基本にする。
3. as … asの間には原級を置く。
4. 英文が数値で確認できる事実か、資料だけでは言えない推測かを区別する。

上の比較の例は後半の架空の道のデータを参照した英文です。実際の村上市の道路の測定値ではありません。

第4部｜架空の道のデータから比較を読む（問31〜40）

A fictional student group compared three routes from a station to a community center. Route A was 2.4 kilometers long and had a sidewalk that was 1.2 meters wide. Route B was 2.9 kilometers long and had a sidewalk 1.8 meters wide. Route C was 3.1 kilometers long, with a 2.0-meter-wide sidewalk. All measurements were taken on a dry day. Route A was the shortest, but the group did not say it was the safest. A student explained that a wider sidewalk might help people using strollers, although safety depends on more than width alone. Another student suggested checking the roads after heavy rain and observing traffic. The group agreed that comparing numbers can reveal differences, but the figures did not prove which route would work best for every visitor.

資料比較で間違いやすい5点

• more easierのように二重比較級にする。
• the most tallestなど二重最上級にする。
• as … asで比較級を使う。
• 距離が短いことから安全性まで断定する。
• 架空の表の数値を現実の地域交通データとして扱う。
