④言い換え:originally plannedとfirst suggested、could not identify the main ideaとfailed to understand the central messageなどを同じ意味として読み解く。
Dear Students, Thank you for joining the exchange with our partner school overseas. Our first meeting was successful, but some students said they could not understand every question. During the next session, we will allow more time for questions and ask everyone to speak a little more slowly. Each group should prepare two questions about daily life and send them to the organiser by Wednesday. Please do not simply read long scripts. Instead, listen to the answers and ask a short follow-up question if something is unclear. This can help the discussion become a real conversation. We will send a summary of the meeting to everyone afterwards. Students who cannot attend may read it, but they will not be able to ask live questions. The International Team
Q1. What problem did some students report after the first meeting?
Q2. What will change in the next session?
Q3. How should students change the way they speak?
Q4. How many questions should each group prepare?
Q5. What should the questions be about?
Q6. What is the deadline for sending questions?
Q7. What does ‘something’ refer to in ‘if something is unclear’?
Q8. What does ‘This’ refer to in ‘This can help the discussion’?
Q9. What will the organisers send after the meeting?

A science class wanted to learn whether different kinds of soil affected the growth of small plants. The students grew twelve plants in ordinary garden soil and twelve in a new mixture. All plants received the same amount of water. After three weeks, the plants in the new mixture were taller on average. Some students concluded that the mixture must be better. However, their teacher reminded them that the two groups had also been placed in different parts of the room. One group received more sunlight, and the students had not measured the temperature. The results therefore did not prove that the mixture alone caused the difference. The class planned another trial with equal light and temperature conditions. They also decided to record their observations before offering any explanation for the results. This would make their next report more reliable.
Q11. How many plants were grown in each type of soil?
Q12. What condition did all plants share?
Q13. What result was observed after three weeks?
Q14. Did the result prove the mixture was better?
Q15. Which group received more sunlight?
Q16. What was not measured?
Q17. What does ‘the results’ refer to?
Q18. What two conditions will the next trial control?
Q19. What should students record before explaining causes?
Q20. What does ‘This’ in the final sentence mean?
Students sometimes read a large number of short English stories but remember little about them a few weeks later. A reading club tried a method that asked members to write three short sentences after each story. In the first sentence, they described the main character. In the second, they explained a problem. In the third, they wrote how the problem was solved. The club did not ask members to copy sentences from the book. Instead, students used their own words and shared their summaries with a partner. Some learners found this difficult at first because they could read individual sentences but could not identify the main idea. The club leader therefore encouraged them to ask questions while reading. After a month, members could describe unfamiliar stories more clearly, although the club had not compared them with a separate control group.
Q21. What problem do some frequent readers experience?
Q22. How many sentences were written after each story?
Q23. What was the first sentence about?
Q24. What was the second sentence about?
Q25. What was the third sentence about?
Q26. Were students asked to copy from the book?
Q27. What does ‘this’ in ‘Some learners found this difficult’ mean?
Q28. Why was the task difficult for some students?
Q29. What improved after a month?
Q30. Could the club prove the method alone caused the improvement?
A local museum wanted to make its signs easier for visitors who speak different languages. At first, the staff used long English explanations beside the exhibition rooms. Ten visitors tested these signs, and only six found the correct rooms without asking for help. The museum then replaced difficult words with simpler ones and added large arrows. During the second test, eight of ten visitors succeeded. The staff were pleased, but they noticed that the visitors in the two tests were not the same people. They also tested the new signs on a less crowded day. The museum decided to repeat the tests with a larger group under similar conditions before printing permanent signs. The manager said a good sign should be judged by how easily people understand it, not only by how attractive it looks.
Q31. What was the museum trying to improve?
Q32. How many people tested the original signs?
Q33. How many found the correct room in the first test?
Q34. What two features were changed?
Q35. How many succeeded in the second test?
Q36. Did exactly the same visitors join both tests?
Q37. Which test was held on a less crowded day?
Q38. What does ‘they’ refer to in ‘they noticed’?
Q39. Why did the museum plan another test?
Q40. What should the final signs be judged by?

Q1:They could not understand every question.
Q2:There will be more time for questions.
Q3:Speak a little more slowly.
Q4:Two.
Q5:Daily life.
Q6:Wednesday.
Q7:Part of an answer or the conversation.

Q10:Ask live questions.
Q11:Twelve.
Q12:The same amount of water.
Q13:Plants in the new mixture were taller on average.
Q14:No.
Q15:The text does not say which group.
Q16:Temperature.
Q17:The observed differences in plant growth.
Q18:Light and temperature.
Q19:Their observations.
Q20:Recording observations before explaining results under controlled conditions.
Q21:They remember little about stories later.
Q22:Three.
Q23:The main character.
Q24:A problem in the story.
Q25:How the problem was solved.
Q26:No.
Q27:Summarising the story in their own words.
Q28:They could not identify the main idea.
Q29:Their ability to describe unfamiliar stories.
Q30:No, because there was no control group.
Q31:Its signs for visitors.
Q34:Simpler words and larger arrows.
Q35:Eight. 2
Q36:No.
Q37:The second test.
Q38:The museum staff.
Q39:To compare the signs fairly under similar conditions.
Q40:How easily visitors understand them.
