- only if、unless、before、afterの条件を飛ばす:答えの成立条件を失う
- but、however、instead、might、onlyなど、意味を変える語に印をつける
A community group wanted to turn an unused field into a small vegetable garden. It invited students to help on Saturday. At first, the work was planned to start at nine, but the organizers changed it to ten because rain was expected early in the morning. Students were asked to bring water and comfortable shoes. They did not need gardening tools because the community center would provide them. The group planned to plant vegetables only after checking the soil. The leader asked volunteers to record what they observed instead of claiming that the project had already improved the environment. They would discuss the results at a later meeting.

Students studied insects in two gardens. Garden A had more flowers, while Garden B had more trees. On the first visit, they found twelve insects in A and eight in B. Some students concluded that flowers always attracted more insects. However, the teacher noticed that the groups had visited at different times. On their second visit, they observed both gardens at the same time. They found ten insects in A and eleven in B. The teacher explained that the first result did not prove their original theory. The students decided to observe again over several weeks and write down which conditions were different.

A student group wanted to reduce waste at school. They suggested putting recycling boxes near classrooms with clear labels. One member wanted to write that the new boxes would reduce waste by fifty percent. Another student asked where that figure came from, but nobody could find a reliable source. They removed the claim. Instead, their poster said that clearer labels might help students sort waste correctly. During a practice presentation, classmates asked who would empty the boxes and how often the labels would be checked. The group could not answer those questions, so they wrote them down to ask their teacher. They decided to collect data before making any numerical promise.

Mika and Taro read an English article about saving electricity. Mika translated almost every sentence and wrote twenty unfamiliar words in a notebook. Taro read the headings first and tried to identify the main point. After fifteen minutes, Mika had finished only one paragraph, while Taro had reached the end of the main section. However, Taro had missed an important condition near the end. Their teacher said that neither approach was enough on its own. Translating every word could make reading too slow, but reading only for the main idea could hide conditions such as only if or unless. The students agreed to find the main claim, underline important conditions, and check unfamiliar words essential to the evidence.
