結論｜二つとも・どちらか・どちらも〜ないを分ける

Both students like English.のbothは二人ともという意味です。bothの後ろに可算名詞を直接置くときは通常複数形にします。Both student likes English.のように単数名詞と結び付けたり、主語が複数なのにlikesにしたりしないようにします。
either｜二つのうちどちらか
Either answer is correct.は二つの答えのどちらを選んでも正しいという意味です。eitherの後に可算名詞を直接置く場合は通常単数形で、基本的には単数動詞を使います。Either answers are correct.と混同しないようにしましょう。
neither｜二つとも否定
Neither answer is correct.は二つの答えのどちらも正しくないという意味です。neither自体が否定の意味を持つため、学校で習う基本表現ではNeither answer isn’t correct.のような二重否定を避けます。neitherは二つを前提とする点にも注意します。
both of・either of・neither ofの違い
Both of my friends are kind.、Either of the two answers is acceptable.、Neither of the two answers is correct.を比べましょう。ofの後にはmy、the、theseなどで特定した名詞句や代名詞が続きます。neither of＋複数名詞の主語では、フォーマルな文体では単数動詞を使い、口語では複数動詞も使われます。学校では指定の規則と例文を優先してください。
both … and｜AもBも
Both Mika and Ken study English.は美香も健も英語を勉強するという意味です。主語として二人を結ぶのでstudyと複数動詞の形になります。both Mika or Kenのように接続詞を誤らないようにします。
either … or｜AかBのどちらか
You can choose either tea or coffee.は紅茶かコーヒーのどちらかを選べるという意味です。Either Ken or Mika will help you.のように主語を結ぶ場合もあります。主語の数が異なる組み合わせでは動詞の一致に注意が必要なので、学校の指定文型から始めましょう。
neither … nor｜AもBも〜ない
Neither Tom nor Lisa knows the answer.はトムもリサも答えを知らないという意味です。neither … nor全体で否定を表すため、Neither Tom nor Lisa doesn’t know …のように安易にnotを加えないようにします。
not … either｜否定文で『〜もない』
I don’t like coffee, and I don’t like tea either.はコーヒーが好きではなく紅茶も好きではないという意味です。否定文の『〜も』ではtooではなくeitherを使うのが一般的です。Me neitherやNeither do Iのように相手の否定発言へ同意する表現もあります。
Neither do Iの語順
A: I don’t like horror movies. B: Neither do I.は『私も好きではありません』という意味です。neither＋助動詞・be動詞＋主語という倒置になります。I don’t either.でも同様の意味を表せますが、こちらは通常の主語＋助動詞の語順です。
neitherとnoneの違い
二つの選択肢について『どちらも〜ない』ならneitherが基本です。三つ以上の対象について一つもない場合はnoneなどが使われます。ただし実際には談話上の数え方によることもあるので、学校の典型問題では対象が二つか三つ以上かを確認します。
both notは誤解されやすい
Both answers are not correct.は文脈によって『二つとも正しくない』と解釈されたり、『両方が正しいわけではない』と読まれたりして曖昧になり得ます。二つとも誤りであることを明確に言いたい場合はNeither answer is correct.とするほうが分かりやすいです。
主語と動詞の一致を見直す
Both boys are here.、Either boy is here.、Neither boy is here.が基本です。bothとeither・neitherでは、名詞を直接修飾する場合の数が異なります。名詞の語尾とbe動詞に印を付けて確認しましょう。

not bothとneitherは違います。Not both students passed. は「2人とも合格したわけではない」（1人だけ合格した可能性）で、Neither student passed. は「2人とも合格しなかった」です。表現全体の否定範囲を読み間違えないようにしてください。
either / neither … or / norで主語が単数と複数の組み合わせになる場合は、後ろの主語との一致などで表現が変わります。まず学校の既習範囲と例文を確認してください。

Original Passage: Two Ideas for the School Library
Hina and Kota wanted to improve their school library. They had two ideas: a reading event and a book exchange. Both ideas could help students find new books, but they did not have enough time to organise two events in the same week.
Hina said, “Either idea could work. We could choose the event that students want most.” Kota replied, “I don’t dislike either idea, but we need to think about the cost.” He checked their small budget and found that neither plan would be very expensive.
They asked two teachers for advice. Both teachers liked the reading event, but not both teachers were free on Friday. One teacher was available, and the other had a meeting. Hina suggested moving the event to Thursday so both teachers could join.
After talking with the class, the students chose the reading event. Neither Hina nor Kota was disappointed about the book exchange. They decided to try it next month. They learned that choosing one good idea did not mean that the other idea was bad.

注意：第3段落のnot both teachers were freeを読むとき、否定範囲は「二人とも都合がつくわけではない」です。今回の物語では次の文に「一人は都合がついた」と明記されているから一人参加可能と確定します。not bothだけで「必ず一人だけ」と判断しないでください。
学校の定期テストでは指定語を優先する
和文英訳で『どちらも』と書かれているとき、肯定ならboth、否定ならneitherになる典型例が多いです。しかし『どちらか一方』を表すeither、二つの候補のどちらでもよいeitherなど文脈はさまざまです。学校の指定語句や前後の会話を確認して判断してください。
