英検の意見英作文で条件付きの理由を書くとき、if は『もし〜なら』、when は『〜する時』、unless は『〜しない限り』、even if は『たとえ〜でも』です。似た接続詞ですが、前提が確定しているか、例外があるか、条件に左右されないかが異なります。

結論｜意味を間違えない4つの原則
- 未来の条件を表す if 節では通常、will を使わず現在形を用いる。
- when は出来事の発生を時間的に想定する表現で、if の不確実な条件と使い分ける。
- unless は if … not に近い否定条件で、本文の条件の向きを保つ。
- even if は条件が成立しても結論が変わらない譲歩条件を示す。
誤答例を改善する
修正前：
If students will use a quiet room, they can focus better.
改善後：
If students use a quiet room, they may find it easier to focus.
解説：未来の可能性を示す if 節では use と現在形を用います。効果は may で断定しません。

独自英文：
A fictional town plans an outdoor reading event. If it rains heavily, organizers will move the event indoors. When guests arrive, volunteers will provide a program. Unless the indoor hall is available, the event cannot be moved there. Even if attendance is low, organizers will collect feedback.

FAQ
if と when はどちらも『〜するとき』ですか。
日本語では似る場合もありますが、if は条件成立が未確定な場合、when は時間的な出来事を想定する場合に用います。
unless の後に not を入れますか。
通常は unless 自体が『もし〜でなければ』の意味を含むので二重否定に注意します。
if 節に will は絶対に入れられませんか。
意志を表す will など例外的な用法はありますが、一般的な未来条件の基礎では現在形が標準です。
