結論｜準備・実施・作業中・追加対応は違う
- set up A：機器・窓口を設置する、団体・制度を設立する。set up equipment / set up a help desk。
- carry out A：計画・調査・検査・実験を実施する。carry out a survey / carry out an experiment。
- work on A：Aの作業を進める。be working on a reportはまだ完成していない場合がある。
- follow up on A：一度報告された問題・苦情・依頼を後から確認し、必要な追加対応をする。follow up on a complaint。
例えば研究では「機器を設置した」「実験を実施した」「報告書を作成中」「異常なデータを調べ直す予定」という順になります。carry outされたこととwork onの途中であることを混同しないと、内容一致の正確さが高まります。

A science teacher asked students to compare how quickly two kinds of paper absorbed water. Before the lesson, the class set up measuring equipment and prepared identical containers. The students then carried out a small experiment following the teacher’s written instructions. One group noticed that its results were different from the other groups’ results. Instead of immediately claiming that one kind of paper was better, the group began working on a detailed report about its observations. The teacher promised to follow up on the unusual readings by checking whether the equipment had been used correctly. The report was still being written when the lesson ended. The teacher explained that setting up equipment, carrying out a test, working on a report, and following up on a problem are different stages. FAQ
set upとcarry outの違いは何ですか？
set upは機器の準備や組織の設立、carry outは計画した調査・活動の実施です。機器を設置してから実験を実施する、という順序で使われることがあります。
work onとfinishの違いは？
work onは作業に取り組むことです。finishは完了したことを意味するため、work onだけでは完成とは言えません。
follow up onはfollowと同じですか？
異なります。follow up onは一度出た問題・報告・依頼について追加の確認や対応をする句動詞です。follow up on a complaintなどの形で使います。
