4表現の基本｜代替か、選択か、対比か
rather than：「～するのではなく」「～よりむしろ」。We repaired the chairs rather than buying new ones.（新しい椅子を買わず修理した）。instead of＋名詞・動名詞：「～の代わりに」。Instead of using the old entrance, go to the east gate.（旧入口を使わず東門へ）。
in place of＋名詞：「～の代わりに」。A new sign was installed in place of the damaged one.（傷んだ標識の代わりに新標識を設置）。as opposed to＋名詞・動名詞：「～とは対照的に」「～ではなく」。Actual attendance, as opposed to reservations, was recorded.（予約と対照して実出席が記録された）。
rather thanやinstead ofは似た意味になる場合があります。またas opposed toは「単に代替する」というより二つの概念や数量を対比して示すことが多いです。4択では特に、後続の動名詞、複数形、前置詞の有無、意味の対比を確認してください。
