英検準2級プラスの科学・学校・社会に関する長文では、percentage(割合)・percentage point(パーセントポイント)・percent change(相対的な増減率)・share(集団内の構成割合)を区別する必要があります。

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

A school library compared participation in an optional English reading club during two terms. In the spring term, forty of one hundred invited students attended at least one meeting. In the autumn term, fifty of one hundred invited students attended. The participation share therefore rose from 40 percent to 50 percent. A student wrote that the share had risen by 10 percent. The librarian explained that the change was ten percentage points, while the relative increase from the original 40 percent was 25 percent. The actual number of participating students increased by ten. The librarian also warned that the data did not show that ten particular spring participants had been replaced by other students, because individual attendance histories had not been compared. The school would continue to collect participation information and ask students about the reasons for their choices. It did not claim that the increase proved any one activity had caused the change.

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

A town museum asked visitors whether they were satisfied with the new information signs. In the first survey, sixty out of one hundred respondents answered yes. In the second survey, forty-five out of seventy-five respondents answered yes. A volunteer noticed that the number of positive answers had dropped from sixty to forty-five and concluded that the satisfaction rate had fallen. However, both surveys actually showed a 60 percent positive response rate: sixty divided by one hundred and forty-five divided by seventy-five are equal to 0.6. The museum explained that a smaller number of positive responses does not always mean a smaller percentage when the total number of respondents also changes. It also noted that respondents were volunteers and did not necessarily represent every museum visitor. The team planned to improve how it collected feedback before drawing broader conclusions about the success of the signs.

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

An English class studied a report on electricity use in a school building. Before an energy-saving project, the building used two hundred units of electricity during a fixed reporting period. In a later period of the same length, the meter showed one hundred fifty units. The decrease was fifty units. Relative to the original two hundred units, this was a 25 percent reduction. The students were careful not to describe the result as a decrease of twenty-five percentage points, because the report gave electricity quantities rather than percentages of a total. The teacher explained that the data showed a change in use but did not by itself prove which action had caused it. Some rooms had changed their schedules during the project, so the class planned to examine those differences. The report also mentioned that twenty of the original two hundred units had come from a small solar system, but the class kept electricity generation and total use as separate figures.

問25. What was the original electricity use?

A. 150 units / B. 200 units / C. 50 units / D. 20 units

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

A community center compared how visitors reached its building. In an earlier survey of one hundred respondents, twenty-five people said they usually walked. In a later survey, forty out of one hundred respondents said they walked. The share of people choosing walking therefore increased from 25 percent to 40 percent, a rise of fifteen percentage points. Relative to the earlier walking share, the increase was 60 percent because fifteen is sixty percent of twenty-five. Staff emphasized that this did not mean sixty additional people walked: the observed number rose by fifteen. Another volunteer believed the change proved that a new sidewalk had caused more walking. The center explained that the survey alone could not show this. The groups of respondents might have been different, and other conditions could also matter. The center planned to collect further travel information before recommending additional construction. Its report showed the original counts and the percentages together.

FAQ
