英検準2級プラスでは、interpret(解釈する)・translate(翻訳する)・paraphrase(言い換える)・summarize(要約する)の違いを理解すると、Readingだけでなく英文要約にも役立ちます。

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)
A city museum offered a short video about the history of local bridges. The video had English captions, and the museum provided a separate written transcript. To help visitors from different language backgrounds, staff translated the main visitor instructions into Japanese and English. A volunteer then wrote a brief summary of the video for an online event page. The summary described why bridges were important to the town and mentioned that the museum had collected old photographs, but it left out several small examples. One visitor thought the summary was a complete translation of the transcript. The guide explained that a translation changes the language while aiming to preserve the meaning, whereas a summary selects the main information and is shorter. Another visitor interpreted the old photographs as proof that every bridge had been built in the same year. The curator corrected the claim, noting that the photographs showed different dates. The museum planned to review all versions before publishing further updates.

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)
An English teacher introduced a short article about community gardens. The article explained that gardens provide opportunities for residents to grow food and meet neighbors. It also noted a problem: maintaining shared gardens requires time and volunteers. Students were asked to read the full article, paraphrase one difficult sentence in simpler English and then summarize the central points. One student produced a paraphrase that kept almost all the original information but used different wording. Another student made a summary that mentioned the benefits of gardens but left out the difficulty of finding volunteers. The teacher explained that a summary should include important advantages and problems when both form the main message of the original passage. The class corrected the shorter text and checked that it did not add unmentioned details. The students also translated selected vocabulary items into Japanese, but the teacher reminded them that vocabulary translation was a separate exercise from writing an English summary. Afterward, the class compared their revised work with the source text.

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)
A community center asked eighty people about the way they traveled to its building. Fifty said they usually walked or cycled, twenty used public transportation and ten traveled mainly by car. A student prepared an English summary saying that nearly everyone avoided cars. The teacher asked the student to check the numbers rather than use a vague phrase. Fifty out of eighty is 62.5 percent, so the figures supported the claim that a majority walked or cycled, not that nearly all respondents did so. Another student translated the report from Japanese into English, keeping the three categories and their counts. The teacher explained that translating all the figures accurately did not necessarily produce a concise summary. The class also interpreted the numbers cautiously: a survey of eighty respondents did not prove that the same percentages applied to every resident of the town. They revised the summary to state the main pattern and the limited size of the survey without inventing a reason for people’s travel choices.

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)
A high school science club created a display about small solar panels. The original report described a test in which a panel produced more electricity on a clear afternoon than on a cloudy one. The students also found that energy output depended on the panel’s angle and the length of the observation period. They wanted to summarize the experiment for younger visitors. One volunteer proposed writing that solar panels always provide enough energy for every building. The club rejected the sentence because the original report did not support such a guarantee. Instead, they wrote a short English summary covering the general result and the conditions that influenced output. Another student was assigned to translate the visitor instructions into Japanese. A third student interpreted the graph, explaining that the data showed a difference between the two test periods but did not prove a result for every season. Before the exhibition opened, the teacher checked that the summary, translated instructions and graph explanations agreed with the original records.
