evidence supporting an explanation。
proof of purchase(購入証明)、proof that …(~である証明)。
a clue about where something came from。
a sign of danger/a warning sign。

A public library introduced a new system for borrowing tablets. The librarian explained that each borrower needed proof of membership before receiving a device. A valid card or a registration receipt could serve this purpose.

After a month, staff noticed that some tablets had not been returned by their deadlines. This was a sign that the return process might need improvement, but it was not proof that borrowers were deliberately keeping the devices. Staff collected evidence by comparing borrowing records with the location of devices in storage. They found that several tablets had actually been returned but placed on the wrong shelf.

A handwritten note beside that shelf gave staff a clue about why the mix-up had occurred: temporary volunteers had been told to use an outdated room number. The library updated its instructions and planned another check before claiming that the problem had been solved. It also explained that a warning sign, a clue and evidence could all be useful without being final proof.

正解:D. A note referring to an outdated room number。handwritten note with outdated room number。

Students at a secondary school wondered why a school garden became muddy after rain. They observed pools of water near one corner. The water was a sign that drainage might be poor, but the students could not yet prove the cause.

They measured how quickly equal amounts of water passed through soil samples from three locations. The results provided evidence that soil conditions differed. However, the team also noticed that the corner received less sunlight and was used more often as a shortcut. Those differences made it difficult to conclude that soil type alone caused the problem.

A small pipe shown on an old map provided a clue about where water might travel underground. Students asked a school engineer to check whether the pipe was still in use. They prepared a report separating clues, evidence and unconfirmed explanations. Before spending money on repairs, the school planned another experiment and a safety inspection. The teacher stressed that a visible sign of a problem is not necessarily proof of one particular cause.

Q29. What was the standing water a sign of?

A. Proof that every pipe was broken / B. A possible drainage problem / C. A confirmed lack of sunlight / D. A closed school

D. Sunlight and use of the path could also matter。

A town installed new signs near a busy pedestrian crossing. In the first week, several residents said that drivers seemed to slow down earlier. Their comments were a positive sign, but the town did not treat them as proof that the crossing had become safer.

The transport team collected evidence by recording vehicle speeds before and after installation. Some speeds were lower, but traffic volume and weather had also changed. The team therefore avoided claiming that the signs alone caused the difference. An older photograph of the junction provided a clue that a tree had previously blocked the view of one sign. Workers checked the current position of the tree.

The mayor explained that proof of a long-term safety improvement would require a longer period of reliable observations, not just a few favorable comments. The town planned to review speeds, near-miss reports and the needs of residents using wheelchairs. It also asked local schools whether students could read the signs from a suitable distance.

Q33. How did the town treat the positive early comments?

A. As useful signs, not proof of safety / B. As proof every driver followed the rules / C. As irrelevant to any future study / D. As permission to close the road

正解:D. Longer observations and other safety data。more reliable observations and multiple measures。

A community group collected unopened food from shops and distributed suitable items to families. At first, the number of donated packages increased. Some volunteers considered this a sign that the program was helping more people, but the manager said it did not prove how many families had received useful items.

Staff compared donation records with actual distribution figures. This evidence showed that several packages could not be distributed because labels were missing. A note on one box gave a clue about which shop had supplied it, allowing staff to request more information. Nevertheless, the group could not assume that all unsuitable packages had come from the same source.

The manager wanted proof that reporting totals accurately reflected the service. The organization introduced separate records for donations, usable packages and actual deliveries. It planned to review results over several months before making strong claims about reducing waste. The report described where there was evidence and where uncertainty remained.

Q37. What was the increase in donations considered?
