英検準2級プラスの英文では、efficient(効率的)・effective(効果的)・useful(役立つ)・practical(実用的)が同じ「良いもの」を表すとは限りません。

an efficient system / energy-efficient equipment。
effective in reducing mistakes。
useful for students / useful information。
a practical solution。

特に efficient but ineffective(効率はよいが目的を達成できない)という組み合わせは成立します。

Reading:A school noticed that teachers spent a long time printing and sorting worksheets. It introduced a digital system that automatically placed files into class folders. Teachers reported that preparing the same number of worksheets now required less time. They described the new system as more efficient.

The school also wanted to know whether the worksheets were effective in helping students understand lessons. Teachers compared homework mistakes before and after the change. Some errors decreased, but the school recognized that class content and examination schedules had also changed.

Printed instructions remained useful for students without reliable internet access. The principal decided that removing all paper was not a practical solution because some families needed physical copies.

The school therefore kept both formats. It measured staff time, student understanding and access separately instead of assuming that a faster system automatically improved learning for everyone.

Reading:A town installed water refill stations in several parks. Workers developed a more efficient maintenance route so they could inspect the same number of stations while traveling fewer kilometers. This reduced the time required for regular checks.

The council wanted to know whether new filters were effective in improving water quality. Engineers measured samples before and after installation, but they did not claim that a single test proved permanent improvement. The town planned to repeat the tests in different seasons.

An online map showing the locations of refill stations was useful to people visiting a park for the first time. However, some older residents preferred paper maps. The council decided that providing only the online version would not be practical until printed information was also available.

Staff reviewed water quality, maintenance costs and visitor access as different aspects of the service. The manager emphasized that efficiency in maintenance did not automatically guarantee that water quality and accessibility had improved.

Q29. What made the maintenance route more efficient?

A. Workers traveled fewer kilometers for the same checks / B. It removed all safety inspections / C. It doubled the number of parks / D. It required no workers

D. Some people still needed printed information。

Reading:A school science club built portable solar lanterns. Students tried a more efficient charging circuit that could store the same amount of electricity using less power from the test supply. They measured input and stored energy to compare two designs.

The teacher reminded them that an efficient circuit was not necessarily an effective lamp for outdoor use. A lantern also needed to remain bright enough after cloudy weather. During the first trial, one design produced acceptable light for longer, but it was heavier.

A simple chart of brightness and battery life was useful for choosing between designs. However, the club had limited money and could not purchase an expensive protective case. It therefore chose a practical design that could be built with available materials and tested safely.

The students planned further experiments rather than conclude that their preferred model would be best in every location. Weather, maintenance and safety needed to be considered.

Q33. What was compared to assess efficiency?

A. Energy input and energy stored by charging circuits / B. The number of students visiting a museum / C. Only the lantern’s color / D. The length of school holidays

A. Energy input and energy stored by charging circuits。

Q34. What was needed to judge outdoor effectiveness?

D. It could be built safely with available materials and budget。

Reading:A public library changed the way visitors reserved small meeting rooms. Previously, staff entered each booking by hand. The new software reduced repeated typing and allowed the same number of reservations to be processed with less staff time. It was more efficient.

The manager also asked whether automated reminder messages were effective in reducing missed bookings. After two months, the number of unused reservations decreased, but the library noted that examination schedules and weather might also have affected demand.

A printed guide remained useful for visitors who were unfamiliar with online booking. Some people could read the instructions but could not use a smartphone. For those visitors, a telephone option was a practical way to complete bookings without purchasing a new device.

The library planned to keep several booking methods available. It would evaluate administrative efficiency, the effectiveness of reminders, the usefulness of the guide and the practicality of each method separately.

Q37. What made the new software efficient?
