結論:理科の英文を読むときは what was changed(意図して変えた条件)、what was kept the same(両方でそろえた条件)、what was measured(測定した結果)を別々に確認します。

A school science club tested whether light affected the growth of young bean plants. The students placed ten plants near a window and ten in a shaded corner. Both groups received the same amount of water and used the same type of soil. The students measured the height of every plant at the beginning and again after fourteen days. Plants near the window grew by an average of eight centimeters, while plants in the shaded corner grew by an average of five centimeters. The factor the students deliberately changed was the amount of light. The result they measured was growth in height. Their teacher said the results suggested that light might influence growth under those conditions. However, the experiment used only twenty plants in one room, so it did not establish how every plant species would grow in every location. The students planned to repeat the test.

A class compared two paper-airplane designs. Both designs were made from the same size and type of paper, and the same student launched every airplane from the same starting line. Design A had wider wings than Design B. The students recorded the distance of five flights for each design. Design A flew an average of six meters, while Design B flew an average of four meters. The teacher asked students not to confuse distance with speed. The class had measured how far the planes traveled, not their speed through the air. Although wing width was the main difference, small changes in throwing force might still have affected the results. The teacher therefore described the outcome as a finding from ten launches rather than proof about every possible paper airplane.

  1. What was the main design difference?
    1. Paper size.
    2. Wing width.
    3. The starting line.
    4. The person launching the planes.

    2. Four meters.
    3. Six meters.
    4. Ten meters.
  4. Why did the teacher avoid a universal rule?
    1. Different students used different starting lines.
    2. The class never launched Design B.
    3. Throwing force could vary and only ten flights were tested.
    4. Both designs traveled the same distance.

  1. The same student launched every airplane.(正/誤)
  2. Each design was tested ten times.(正/誤)
  3. Design B averaged four meters.(正/誤)
  4. The class measured flight speed.(正/誤)

An English club compared ways to review twenty vocabulary words. Twelve students in Group A used paper flashcards, while twelve in Group B used a digital quiz. Both groups reviewed the same words for fifteen minutes each day for one week. On Friday, everyone answered the same twenty vocabulary questions. Group A averaged sixteen correct answers and Group B averaged seventeen. The test measured vocabulary performance, not how much students enjoyed studying. The teacher said that a difference of one answer between small groups was not enough to claim that digital quizzes were always the best method. Some members of Group B had also used learning apps more often before the experiment. The club planned to investigate students’ earlier experience before doing another comparison.

  1. How did Group A study?
    1. With paper flashcards.

A science teacher put the same amount of warm water at sixty degrees Celsius into two similar containers. One container had an insulated cover; the other had no cover. Both remained in the same classroom for thirty minutes. The water in the covered container then measured fifty-two degrees, while the water in the uncovered container measured forty-six degrees. The first had lost eight degrees and the second had lost fourteen. The condition being tested was the presence of the cover, and the measured result was the change in water temperature. The class did not compare different amounts of water or different room temperatures. The teacher said the results supported a possible insulating effect in this classroom. The students could not claim that the same temperature changes would occur outdoors in winter because they had not tested that situation.

  1. What did the class change?
    1. The starting water temperature.
    2. The amount of water.
    3. The classroom.
    4. Whether a cover was used.
  2. What was the covered water’s final temperature?
    1. Sixty degrees.
    2. Fifty-two degrees.
    3. Forty-six degrees.
    4. Thirty degrees.
  3. How much temperature did the uncovered water lose?
    1. Eight degrees.
    2. Six degrees.
    3. Fourteen degrees.
    4. Twenty degrees.
  4. What situation was NOT tested?
    1. Outdoor conditions in winter.
    2. Two containers in the same room.
    3. Water temperature after thirty minutes.
    4. Using a cover on one container.

  1. Both containers began at sixty degrees.(正/誤)
  2. The uncovered container finished warmer than the covered one.(正/誤)
  3. The measured result was a change in water temperature.(正/誤)
  4. The test proved what would happen in any outdoor winter.(正/誤)

A nature club placed two bird feeders in the same school garden. Feeder A contained sunflower seeds, while Feeder B contained a mixed seed food. The feeders were the same size and were filled with the same weight of food. During five mornings, the students observed the feeders for fifteen minutes each morning and counted bird visits. Feeder A received forty visits in the recorded periods, while Feeder B received thirty-two. The class did not identify every individual bird. One bird might have visited several times, so forty visits did not mean forty different birds. The club also did not measure exactly how much food was eaten. The teacher said feeder position might have influenced the number of visits. The students planned to exchange the feeders’ positions in a later test.

  1. What was different between the feeders?
    1. Their size.
    2. The type of seed food.
    3. Their total food weight.
    4. The observation schedule.
  2. What did students count?
    1. Bird visits.
    2. Different individual birds.
    3. The exact weight of food eaten.
    4. The weight of each bird.
  3. How many more visits did Feeder A receive?
    1. Forty.
    2. Thirty-two.
    3. Eight.
    4. Seventy-two.
  4. Why did the students plan to exchange positions?
    1. One feeder was broken.
    2. They had stopped observing birds.
    3. The food types were already identical.
    4. Feeder location might influence the visits.

  1. The feeders were the same size.(正/誤)
  2. Forty visits prove that forty different birds visited A.(正/誤)
  3. Students measured exactly how much food the birds ate.(正/誤)
  4. A later test was planned to exchange the feeders’ positions.(正/誤)

  1. C.The amount of light.
  2. A.The plants’ growth in height.
  3. D.Three centimeters. 8−5=3cm。
  4. B.That all plant species always grow faster near windows.

  1. B.Wing width.
  2. D.Flight distance. how far, not speed。
  3. A.Two meters. 6−4=2m。

  1. D.Whether a cover was used.
  2. B.Fifty-two degrees. covered 52℃。
  3. C.Fourteen degrees. 60−46=14℃。
  4. A.Outdoor conditions in winter.

  3. 正 temperature change was measured。
  4. 誤 outdoors in winter was not tested。

  1. B.The type of seed food.
  2. A.Bird visits. visits, not individuals。
  3. C.Eight. 40−32=8。
  4. D.Feeder location might influence the visits.

  1. 正 same size。
  3. 誤 food eaten not measured。
  4. 正 planned to exchange positions。
