英検準2級の数字の長文|per person・in total・on averageを読み分ける

結論:per personは1人あたり、in totalは合計、on averageは平均です。

A school organized a museum visit for twelve students and two teachers. The normal ticket price was six hundred yen per student and nine hundred yen per teacher. The museum offered the school a ten-percent discount on student tickets only. Each student’s ticket therefore cost five hundred and forty yen, while each teacher still paid nine hundred yen. The student tickets cost six thousand four hundred and eighty yen in total, and the two teacher tickets cost one thousand eight hundred yen. The whole group’s admission was eight thousand two hundred and eighty yen. This amount did not include the bus fare, which was paid separately by the school. A school art club rented three digital cameras for one afternoon. Under the fictional rental policy, each camera had a rental fee of four hundred yen and a refundable deposit of six hundred yen. When the club brought back all three cameras in good condition, the staff approved a refund of all three deposits, totaling one thousand eight hundred yen. The Green Library offered three Saturday reading sessions. Each session had eight occupied seats, so the library recorded twenty-four attendances in total. However, this did not mean that twenty-four different people visited. Some students attended more than one session. After checking the registration records, staff confirmed that fifteen different students had participated at least once. One student joined all three sessions, while other students attended one or two. The average number of occupied seats per session was eight. The club did not list the average number of sessions per student, although it could be calculated from the totals: twenty-four attendances divided by fifteen different students equals 1.6 sessions per student on average. The organizer said that counting visits and counting unique visitors were two different ways to describe the activity.

At a fictional town museum, four school classes visited on different mornings. The first class had eighteen students, the second twenty-one, the third seventeen, and the fourth twenty-four. Staff recorded the student numbers separately, without including teachers or parents in those counts. The total student attendance across the four class visits was eighty. The average number of students per class was twenty. The largest class had twenty-four students, and the smallest had seventeen, giving a difference of seven. The museum explained that twenty was an average across the four classes, not a claim that every class contained exactly twenty students. The staff did not report how many teachers came with the groups, so the total number of people visiting could not be calculated from these figures alone.

A school reading club borrowed books from a public library for a group project. There were six students in the club. The librarian allowed each student to borrow up to four books, so the maximum number the whole group could borrow at one time was twenty-four books. However, the students actually borrowed only eighteen books in total. The average number borrowed per student was three, although individual students did not necessarily borrow exactly three. Some borrowed two books, and others borrowed four. All borrowed books had to be returned within two weeks. The librarian reminded the group that ‘up to four per student’ described a limit, not how many books every student had actually taken. Students who wanted to borrow more later would need to return books first if they had reached the individual limit.

    1. Four.
    2. Six.

FAQ
