結論:one in five は5人に1人(5つに1つ)、half は半分、one third は3分の1、two thirds は3分の2、twice as many は2倍の人数・数、percent は百分率です。

Fifty students answered a survey about after-school activities. One in five chose the library as the place they most wanted to visit. This meant ten of the fifty students, or twenty percent of those who answered. Thirty chose the sports center, and the remaining ten chose the art room. The sports center therefore received three times as many votes as the library. The survey did not include every student at the school, so the results could not show that exactly twenty percent of the whole school preferred the library. The teacher also reminded the class that choosing a place in a survey did not prove a student had actually visited that place after school. The school planned to ask more students before changing its after-school schedule.

A science festival recorded one hundred and twenty registered visitors. Each person was counted once in the official figures. Half of those visitors entered in the morning, which was sixty people. One quarter entered during the middle session, or thirty people. The remaining thirty entered in the afternoon session. Therefore, the morning group was twice as large as either of the other two groups. The organizers did not measure how long each visitor stayed inside the exhibition. Someone who entered in the morning could have remained until the afternoon, so the entry-time categories did not show how many people were inside at a particular moment. The festival used the numbers only to plan future entrance staffing.

At a school photography exhibition, eighty valid votes were counted. Forty votes went to pictures of local scenery, twenty-four went to animal photographs, and sixteen went to pictures of buildings. The scenery category therefore received half of all votes, or fifty percent. Animal pictures received thirty percent, and building pictures received twenty percent. The animal category received eight more votes than the building category. The teacher explained that these numbers described votes, not necessarily eighty different voters, because the event had allowed each visitor to vote for more than one category. The class could not calculate the exact number of individual voters from the eighty ballots alone. The organizers planned to change the voting instructions next year to make the count easier to interpret.

A community center collected sixty glass bottles during an environmental event. Volunteers inspected them and found that twenty were clean and undamaged enough to be reused as containers. This was one third of the collection. The remaining forty bottles, or two thirds, were sent to a recycling facility for possible processing. The center did not claim that all forty had already been turned into new glass products. Sending items for recycling was the next step, not proof that processing had finished. The number of bottles sent to the facility was twice the number set aside for direct reuse. The organizers planned to ask the facility what happened to the bottles before reporting a final recycling result.

A school planned a visit to a science museum for five groups. Each group contained twelve students, so sixty students were included in the plan. Three of the groups planned to travel by train and the other two by bus. Because all groups had the same size, the train groups contained thirty-six students and the bus groups contained twenty-four. This means sixty percent of the students planned to use trains and forty percent planned to use buses. The school had confirmed the planned transportation methods, but it had not yet measured the actual arrival times. The teacher reminded students that a transport plan was not proof that everyone had arrived on schedule. All groups were asked to check in at the museum after arrival.

英文のof those who answeredが割合の対象を限定しています。

either of the other two groupsは、ほかの二組のそれぞれを比較対象にしています。

FAQ

Q. one in fiveと20 percentは同じですか?

Q. halfとtwice as manyは同じ意味ですか?
